Russell won a state title... every other team that won a championship had at least ONE kid on the team.... russell had about 3 or 4 excellent football players that could have played on this team.... Drew Mell (all state), Michael Horn (all state), Tommy Brown, Derek Timblerlake (over 110 tackles in 2005) one of these kids deserved to be on that team..... without this group of kids russell does not win the 2A title..

Two things about this (1) I read what his dad has been saying on another site about this but remember he was the first person to get on that same board and be critical of other players from SW. (2) If I was his parent I would be concerned that he made better grades and got cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse instead of sports at the moment.

The tape is not a requirement. There are alot of good players not on the team because the quality of football has improved so much in our state. I know I am a broken record saying that, but it is the truth and it is important to remember.

Gumm was the best defensive lineman that I have seen the last couple of years, the all-star team must be loaded on the defensive line if he did not make it!

Gumm apparently had NO offers from even the 1AA schools in state. Hard to make the team when there are 2-3 guys at his position that signed division 1 scholarships.

Hey let me tell you something about "HOMERS!"

 

You have probably never even seen Ron Blume play! If you haven't you missed some great performances from this kid! Tell me one thing how many kids have you seen go on the road and have 22 carries for over 400 yds. against a team that was suppose to be better?

 

Jimmy Chafin is a great player but let's go to one game Chafin and Blume can be compared and that is against Paintsville. Blume had over 300 yds. against the Tigers and Chafin although they said was hurt came in 2 times late in the game on 4th and short and got the first down! That is awesome but where was he on the other plays. Mr. Chafin if you are reading let me tell you first hand you are a great running back and I am not taking anything away from you.

How could any coach leave Blume off this team? Yes, all these kids on the team deserve to be there! I will not take anything away from those kids! What more does a RB have to do to be on that team?

 

I love High School ft. ball but Blume not being apart of this team makes me angry!

There was no they said about it, Jimmy Chaffin was hurt against Paintsville. He hurt his hip in the first quarter of the game, but he showed a lot of heart gutting it out the rest of the game. To risk him from getting hurt worse he mainly played defense, because Lynn Camp was not a 1 player team in the backfield. Joe Roskopf had over 1000 yards, and Josh Reynolds had over 900 yards rushing. Chaffin will more than likely play special teams and receiver in the game. Blume is a tailback I believe, and Chaffin is not, he was a wing back or halfback what ever you want to call it, and I could be wrong, but I don't look for the KY All-Stars to lineup much in the power I. Chaffin is a great athlete, he can help any team, because if he played at a different school with a different style of offense, he may have played QB or wide receiver, but since LC is a power running team it made sense for him to play in the backfield, because of his explosive abilities to make plays. You compare Chaffin and Blume to one game, and going by that you would be correct. Going by one game of Chaffin against Class A state semi-finalist Somerset, Chaffin had over 100 yards rushing, 100 yards receiving, 70 yard+ kick return for a td, and threw one pass for 30 yards, and kicked several extra points. Another big game of his that shows he is more than a runningback was against Pikeville in the regional championship game in 2003, where Jimmy rushed for over 100 yards and 3 tds, threw for over a 100 yards a two tds, had around 50 yards receiving, and picked off a pass on defense.

In 1999 Quentin Henson of Lynn Camp who is in the top 5 in career rushing in the state, was not selected that year.

I did not say that he deserved it over the others chosen at his position. Kentucky must be strong on the line though which should bold well when they play Tennessee.

I feel like Jimmy made it on his overall ability and versatility. He could possibly help on defense, offense or on special teams.

It does seem like D-1 guys are an automatic selection, but I would like to think that our KY All-Star coaches are smart enough to know that some D-1 guys aren't better than our D-1AA or NAIA players.

 

So much of being a D-1 prospect is based on size and potential, more so than it should be in my opinion, that the truely great high school football players are overshadowed.

 

Is it right? Well, no. But thats the way it is, and to a certain degree I understand why collegiate coaches are going this route.

 

But....In an all-star game, I'll take the 5'11" 250 DL with the motor of a Ferrari and the heart of a lion and kick the youknowwhat out of the scholly player who is 6'3 287 DL with the D-1 potential anyday.

I'll give you those undersized players that have the motor of a Ferrari and the heart of a lion and beat you every time. If D1 players don't have the motor of a ferrari then they aren't D1 players.

Classic example......I'd take Joe Tronzo (DL - Trinity '04) in a matchup against Corey Zirbel (OL - Murray '04?) everyday of the week. Zirbel is 6'7" tall, 300 lbs with an enormous amount of potential and he signed with Michigan. Tronzo is 5'11" 250 lbs and I don't think any D-1 colleges seriously recruited him.

 

And I would bet 1 million dollars against a donut that Tronzo wins that battle everytime. And there are a lot more instances just like that in high school football.

I thought Tronzo was a St. Xavier kid ... he might be mad if he sees that. :lol:
