Stewart, Aldridge, and West are three new signees at Notre Dame, and I know they have done this. Chris Burke was a very intelligent young man who also may have elected to do this. If so, in essence, he is now a college student and no longer eligible for high school participation.

In my extremely brief career in coaching, I have already seen how politics can over-ride common sense...I think this may be the case with Sauerbeck, Blume and Senn...

Common sense? I'm sure the entire All-Star coaching staff and selection committee watched film and evalutated each potential all-star player. I'd be willing to bet in all 3 cases there were players at their position with more SPEED. The combination of size and speed is what wins all-star games (well, any game for that matter) and while Sauerbeck, Blume, and Senn are good players, there were apparently others that were more impressive on film to the coaching staff and selection committee. The objective is to win, which is something the all-star team has done a lot of the past 5 years against Tennesse with the present selection process.

Ummm, in the few Trinity games I saw Senn ran away people - including Garnett Phelps. Phelps is a good player but had a horrible season. Like I said before, the coaches missed the boat here and I would also say I only saw Blume once but when you lead the state in rushing you should get a shot on the All-Star team.

I had the pleasure of seeing Blume play since his sophomore season. And yes, I believe he deserved a shot on this team.

 

With that being said, I don't want that to take anything away from the kids who will be playing in this game. They deserve to be there. We can always find kids that we think could have made the team, but with only so many spots, you know some very deserving kids are left off the list.

There are a lot of good running backs out there. Just because someone leads the state in rushing, regardless of the circumstances and competition level, doesn't necessarily mean they are among the top three or four running backs in the state.

 

As for Phelps and Senn ... who knows? You're in Louisville so you have a better handle on it than I do. I will say that Perry Thomas' team has faced Phelps twice in his career and that he was impressive in both games. That could have been a factor in the decision to choose him over some others.

I did not say that he should have made it over someone else. But, in all honestly, Ron Blume averaged 204 yards per game to lead all rushers in all classes in the state. The closest to him was 188 yards per game.

 

I do have a few players in mind that I think he was as good if not better than, but I don't want to discredit any kid who did make it by saying "X should have made it and Y shouldn't have" as that does take away from a specific kid and I will NEVER go down that road you are trying to lead me down as these kids deserve better than that. These are 17-18 year old kids and I won't do it. If we were talking professional sports, that is a whole different ball game, but I won't discredit any high school kid.

Then you should leave it at "I hope he was considered". Instead of disparaging one running back, you're casting a shadow over all of them, right?

 

BTW, me saying I thought Sauerback was a better LB this year than Guidugli is not a criticism of Ben. Fine player. Its no different than saying who you think the MVP/POY should be. You're picking one and essentially saying the rest , while good, are not AS good. No harm in that.

As far as Senn and Phelps, absolutely no doubt Senn is the better player on both sides of the ball. And I saw both of them about the same amount. Honestly, I thought Senn was the best player in Louisville during the final five weeks of the season because he was doing it on both sides. I don't even know the Senn kid - have met him - but my only beef as a h.s. football fan is a kid gets the shaft over a kid that he not only burned for a TD but also held to under 20 yards receiving in their meeting! Or hey I'll go even farther and say he should have made it over his teammate - Donnell. No question who the better player of those two was this season.

 

But oh well. Go Kentucky!

I'm not passing judgment about Blume's ability or the level of competition he faced, and I'm certainly not saying that he wasn't a good player. For one thing, I've never seen the kid play.

 

But let's face it ... a lot of running backs have great numbers. The selection committee should never take only numbers into account, though.
