January 8, 201412 yr So this writer in LA won't vote for Maddux because he played in the steroid era. He should have his vote taken away. Greg Maddux won't be unanimous Hall selection - ESPN
January 8, 201412 yr This guy is an idiot and has already been bashed by a lot of the national media. His reasoning is beyond stupid and although his credentials may have earned him his vote, his vote should have it taken away. No excuse.
January 8, 201412 yr I mean really, you knew it was gonna happen. I will admit that his reasoning is even dumber than I imagined someone's would be, but you knew there were people out there who were going to do it so he wouldn't be unanimous. He won't be the only one. There will always be guys who say "So and so wasn't unanimous, so no one should be." End result is the same, but I just think it makes those people look like idiots. Because Maddux will go into the hall and there will be people who look it up sometime and say "Wow, that idiot didn't think Maddux deserved to be in the Hall of Fame."
January 8, 201412 yr Author I mean really, you knew it was gonna happen. I'm not surprised it happened (no has ever been unanimously). But this is one of the worst excuses I've heard. The voting system is a total mess. PED's were part of the game. And the argument that the HOF is some sacred hall is just weak. Too many bad characters, drunks, drug users, womanizers, not so nice guys are already in. And to not vote for perhaps the best pitcher of the last 50 years, who has never been linked to PED's other than being the one guy that could get PED users out is a joke.
January 8, 201412 yr This is why the whole process with the Baseball HOF is dumb and doesn't really mean much.
January 8, 201412 yr I think the whole process is a crock. It amazes me that guys like Hal McCoy, Marty B and Vin Scully aren't allowed to vote.
January 8, 201412 yr Maddux does deserve to be a first ballot HoFer, but this isn't shocking at all. Based on past votes he is far less deserving of unanimous vote than many that have come before him. End of the day he goes into Cooperstown as he should, on the first vote.
January 8, 201412 yr IMO those who should make it. Allan Trammel Tim Raines Greg Maddox Jack Morris Tom Glavine Lee Smith Pete Rose Maybe Frank Thomas this year, for sure next year. Those PED users who should Roger Clemens Barry Bonds Mark McGwire
January 8, 201412 yr I think the whole process is a crock. It amazes me that guys like Hal McCoy, Marty B and Vin Scully aren't allowed to vote. That is bull crap
January 8, 201412 yr I think the whole process is a crock. It amazes me that guys like Hal McCoy, Marty B and Vin Scully aren't allowed to vote. Didn't realize that. Just how do you become eligible to vote for the HOF?
January 8, 201412 yr No different from the voters claiming that DH's should not be voted in. Most idiotic statements ever. Anabolic steroids were invented in the 30's. Who knows how many guys have come through and used some sort of PED. It has just never been prevalent until the last couple decades when people started getting "bigger" and crushing balls. If you ask me (and trust me i dont love McGwire or Bonds), but in a way, those guys saved the game in the late 90's early 00's. People love seeing records broke and love seeing guys hit balls 550 ft. They love seeing guys dominate on the mound with a power fastball and dirty offspeed. Its a fact. Name me a baseball fan who doesnt or any sports fan for that matter. Unfortunately, those same people who love it, like im sure this guy loved writing about it, are the same people to make idiotic claims like this guy. With that said, tell me how anybody could use that against a guy like Greg Maddux. Greg Maddux has/had the body of a 60 year old retired golfer. His fastball averaged south of 86 MPH in his latter years and he still mowed people down with his command and saviness on the mound. Tell me how anybody in their right mind could link this guy to any sort of PED? Ridiculous that people like this get a vote. Whether he is unamimous or not, people like this should not have a vote if all they are going to do is try to fill an agenda with it. Then there is the DH argument. Why on earth should a DH not be included in the HOF? They are a position, just the same as a middle relief guy or a closer or anything else. Some make the argument that there would be so many more guys with HOF careers had they been a DH in the AL. Well.. They should have requested to go to the AL then. Players clearly have that ability. Especially now. The DH is part of the game and guys like David Ortiz, Edgar Martinez, and Frank Thomas NEED to be in the HOF.
January 8, 201412 yr He has also said he will not cast a vote ever again. How guys like Bagwell, Biggio, Piazza, and Raines are in real jeopardy of not making it in, again, is a joke. If any of the trio of first timers (Maddux, Glavine, Thomas) don't get in, they might as well just close the doors forever. It's ridiculous. My ballot would be: Bagwell Biggio Piazza Raines Glavine Maddux Thomas Kent Clemens Bonds Schilling and Mussina would get in next season, as there isn't enough room on the ballot for them this year.
January 8, 201412 yr I think the whole process is a crock. It amazes me that guys like Hal McCoy, Marty B and Vin Scully aren't allowed to vote. Since Marty and Vin Scully are team employees and not technically independent, unbiased journalists, I can see that but don't necessarily agree with it. McCoy, on the other hand, has spent his entire career covering the Reds. No way he doesn't have a HOF vote. All you have to do to get your BBWAA is be a working journalist covering MLB for 10 years.
