No Unanimous election to HOF for Maddux

Featured Replies

Biggio was really good compared to his contemporaries. He was never considered one of the best players during his time. Take the overwhelming majority of people to list the top 10 players every season of Biggio's career and he would not make the cut or he would be on the tail end of people's lists most seasons. That is confirmed by his highest MVP voting being 4th one season. I just can't see a guy being regarded as an all time great when it is arguable he wasn't considered a great player during his own time.

Biggio is the position-player version of Don Sutton, who somehow got in.

You can't have absolutes when it comes to determining whether a player gets into the HOF. 3000 used to be a bigger deal than it is now. Ball jumps more now so there's more offense. Mound was lowered in 1968 to promote more offense. More teams means less MLB-quality pitching which means...more offense. So 3000 today ain't 3000 in 1954. Players play longer today as well so these numbers are more about longevity than being elite.

Biggio was not elite.

Biggio is easily a sure-fire HoF'er....It's an absolute travesty that he hasn't been elected yet. Thankfully, he should get in pretty easily next season.

.281 ba, .363 OBP, 1,844 R (15th all-time), 3,060 H (21st all-time), 668 2B (5th all-time), 291 HR, 1,175 RBI, 414 SB, 1,160 BB, 7 All-Star Games, 4 Gold Gloves, 5 Silver Sluggers, 3 Top 10 MVP seasons (2 top 5).

Very good but not great overall numbers, never considered top 10 player during his career and steroid accusations may have a lot to do with why he didn't get the needed votes.

As others have said, he was really good but never Great!!! That plus Steroid rumors and I don't think he gets the needed votes.

Biggio was never rumored to have done steroids. If Barry Larkin is a HOF'er, Biggio is without question.

I think it also depends on your rate a player.

If you rate a player against all of his peers then IMO Biggio isn't a HOFer.

If you rate him against others at his position during his tenure then maybe he's a HOFer.

If you incorporate intangibles ie many positions then "maybe."

If you simply use the "elite" litmus test like I do then he's not in.

He's an interesting case.

That's a fair point, however, I'd argue that he's without question one of the top handful of 2B to ever play the game. Also, he was very good at 3 separate positions. That's not an easy task, especially when you consider the positions were 2B, C, and CF. Not easy transitions by any means.

The article itself, labels the guy as a "kook". I can write an article stating I think Greg Maddux did steroids. Does that really constitute suspicion?

Isn't that what they said about Canseco as well. I had heard the rumors before that article that's why I brought up steroids to begin with.

They all did some form of steroids. If we all just accept that fact it will be much easier to determine who gets in and who doesn't.

If that's where we are now then he has to stand in line, quite a few more steroid users with MUCH better numbers ahead of him.
