KENTON COUNTY, Ohio (Joe Webb) -- Former band director Kenneth Owens is locked up in the Kenton County Jail Monday night and the case against him just keeps growing.

 

Owens now faces sex charges involving underage female students in three northern Kentucky counties. He was in court in Covington Monday where he is facing rape, sodomy and sexual abuse charges.

 

Kenneth David Owens was originally charged in Grant County in September and forced to resign as the band director there. Two weeks ago he was indicted in Kenton County for allegations of sex with a student when he was the band director at Beechwood High School.

 

That's what he was in court for Monday but his attorney said there are even more charges and Owens will be in court in yet another county later this week.

 

Wearing a pink jail jumpsuit, Kenneth David Owens was arraigned for rape, sodomy and sexual abuse in Covington Monday afternoon. Owens' attorney told the judge the former band director's mother was in court with $5,000 in cash to post bond for him. But the prosecutor argued for a higher bond because the case against Owens was growing.

 

The attorney confirmed that.

 

"Your honor, he's been indicted in Boone County. There's a criminal summons. He's to appear Wednesday at 1 o'clock in Boone Circuit Court. The one thing I'd like to say to the court. I understand the Commonwealth's concern about him absconding but we've known about these charges coming in Kenton County for some time."

 

The judge kept his bond at 25,000 dollars cash, saying the escalating case made Owens more of a danger to the community.

 

The Boone County indictment alleges Owens sexually abused an underage girl in April 2011. That's one incident. In Kenton County, Owens is accused of an ongoing sexual relationship with a student that started when she was 14. They allegedly had sex in a variety of locations, including Beechwood High School.

Access. How do you give anybody that much access to your kid???? I guess because of what happened to me as a kid, I'm just more guarded than most but no coach, teacher, clergy member, etc. has EVER had that much alone time with one of mine.

Any band director potentially has more access than most. They are in class all day. Band is a year round activity. They travel to camps and competitions, and practice long hours. Beechwood parents are extremely involved in band activities, but parents can't be present all the time.

 

Access comes in many ways. Texts, emails, cell phones. It is so much easier than it was 25 years ago. Even young teenagers can be pretty sophisticated and sneaky when they want to be. It would be very easy for an adult to target a kid and entice him/her to sneak around. Anyone who believes they know exactly where their teenage kids are at all times is fooling themselves IMO.

 

Parents put a lot of trust in teachers, coaches and band directors. In the vast majority of the cases, this trust is well placed. If this guy did what he is accused of, it is a terrible breech of their trust, with terrible consequences for the children involved.

Who hired him from Beechwood? They should be fired? The guy was arrested in September for Rape.

Your reading it wrong. Guy was Beechwoods former band director 3-4 years ago, and then left to become band director at Grant Co and was their 3-4 years. Once the charges came about from the Grant Co incident (this school year), other charges have come about from his time at Beechwood with a different student, allegedly.
