Your reading it wrong. Guy was Beechwoods former band director 3-4 years ago, and then left to become band director at Grant Co and was their 3-4 years. Once the charges came about from the Grant Co incident (this school year), other charges have come about from his time at Beechwood with a different student, allegedly.

 

OK, maybe I'm confused here. So did he leave BW 3-4 years ago on his own accord or was he told to leave and things were not mentioned because he left? Then, as I read your post, he takes a job at Grant and can't keep his hands to himself and a similar issue crops up 3-4 years later? By my count that is 6-8 years, How does this not get mentioned to the BOE at Grant at time of employment?

I would think that in lots of cases, a victim would be more willing to go forward if there was someone else who had been affected too. Having your story corroborated by another victim means that the victim would not be alone when trying to press charges. For a rape victim, I'd imagine there's a lot of fear, humiliation, and embarrassment in the process. You can probably see how, logically, a victim would think, how awful will this be if no one believes me? Aside from that, if the areas are close together like in Grant County and Beechwood, the news reaching the original victim might be some type of trigger mentally that gets them to open up about it and/or makes people like the parents look back on circumstances and to do so differently when looking in hindsight.

Unsure. I think 'consensual' may be misleading depending on the connotation. Under many laws, someone cannot 'consent' if they aren't of a certain age, regardless of how each party feels about it.

We covered this in another teacher/student sex thread but in short while the age of consent is normally 16 years old in the state of Kentucky for any teacher the student has to be both out of high school and 18 or it is unlawful.

Only way I can think of is if the girl never mentioned it to a friend. That's unusual though.

 

Or the girl never mentioned it because it was "consensual" but the sweet smell of Beechwood greenbacks motivated her to come forward.

 

Or the girl was a victim in many ways and after a lot of help/therapy is just now able to come forward.

 

Or Beechwood knew but wasn't too interested in notifying anyone, even anonymously, because of the potential liability.

 

Or the victim just moved on with life until she heard about other victims and decided this man had to be stopped and she would not be alone in her fight to stop him.

 

Or all of the above, none of the above, who knows...

I was worried what I said might not come out right. I agree with you. I'm glad he's finally been caught if he's the predator that it's being claimed.

FYI Plead Guilty and got 10 years.

Owens, who had been director of the GCHS Marching Band since 2009, was band director at Beechwood High School in Ft. Mitchell prior to coming to GCHS.

 

During the Grant County investigation against Owens, a family member of a second alleged victim called the Grant County Sheriff’s Office to report a former Beechwood student also had a sexual relationship with Owens.

 

The second victim, who is now 23 and lives out of the state, was then interviewed by police and disclosed that in 2004 when she was a 14-year-old freshman at Beechwood, the victim had a four-year sexual relationship with Owens.

 

JoAnn Owens became aware of the inappropriate relationship in the fall of 2004, according to court documents.

 

In response to an e-mail the student sent her husband, JoAnn Owens replied, “There is a thing called ‘the law.’ It says that students may not have conversation, e-mails, letters or relationships outside the classroom. I wanted to let you know that no matter what you are going through, you probably should not have conversations with Mr. Owens, like you have been having. It isn’t healthy for you and it puts him at risk.”

 

JoAnn Owens sent another lengthy e-mail from her Grant County Schools e-mail account to the Beechwood student in 2010.

 

“I relive that day I found out, over and over each day in my mind… feeling every emotion I felt,” the e-mail states. “True agony is the way to describe it. I kept telling myself, literally, ‘I’m living someone’s else’s nightmare’… repeating it over and over… ‘This isn’t happening to me.’”

 

Owens is set to be sentenced March 5.
