If the 5 starters for both teams could stay on the floor the entire game it would be very close. However Brossart isn't very deep and foul trouble will be their demise. Jennings is really the only guard they have to stay with Bolden and I don't see him being able to do it without accumulating fouls. Also Brossart twin towers are very good but once they go out size becomes a huge issue for Brossart . Stays close awhile but Holmes will coast to a 15+ point win before it's over. The new way of calling the game with lots of extra fouls will do no favors for Brossart either

Good point, I forgot about the lack of depth Brossart has.

These two have one common opponent:

Holmes 87 Newport 45

Brossart 66 Newport 57

You can't take much from comparing scores but I think some of you are seriously underestimating Holmes and the talent they have....

Holmes is widely regarded as a top 5-10 team in the state depending on which poll you look at.

Yes, Brossart winning would be a mild upset.

Agree, why I put mild upset in my post.

Trentman and Burns will be too much for Hill and Chames. Should be very close.

The game will be a learning experience for both teams. Last year's smallish Bulldog bunch was involved in a lot of close games and won by hitting 3's, going to the line more than the other team, and keeping the ball in Bolden's hands most of the time. This year's team is different and, I think, better in every area other than hitting 3's and hitting free-throws. I particularly will be watching how well Holmes defends a real good team with a couple of bigs, because I think Holmes' coaching staff really has the team focused on D right now. (Newport only scored 20-something points after the first quarter a week ago, and Lloyd only managed 24 the entire game.)

I too think that Holmes has some major quickness/matchup advantages that we (Brossart) will have to overcome.

Good news, we are big, but defensively against a quicker team, maybe not so good. We will have to improve dramatically on stopping dribble penetration in order to stay competitive in this one. Foul trouble is certainly a concern. However, I am anxious to see the Jennings/Bolden matchup. I hope they let them play.

Even I too would consider a Mustangs win in the Evans Fieldhouse an upset.

I think Holmes probably wins, but would Brossart winning really be an upset?

Heck yes. Holmes is a Top 10 team in the state, at home, Brossart (whom I'm a big fan of) isn't of that ilk.

Interesting that last year both of Holmes' regular season losses came at home -- to NewCath in two OT's and to CovCath on the half-court shot. Team was undefeated on the road except for the season-ending OT loss to eventual state champ Madison Central in second round of Sweet 16.

I'm real high on the Bulldogs right now for too many reasons to mention. The way they came out against Purcell relentlessly denying them, especially in the first quarter, to get a shot off was breathtaking. I lost count of how many blocked shots there were in the early goings, but far more that you'd typically see from any high school squad. Their execution of such a swarming quick 'D' allowed them a frenzy of numerous baskets in transition awarding them an early giant insurmountable lead. They were jaw dropping impressive to say least.

With that said, I'd be a fool not to respect what Brossart brings to the table. I don't see a blowout here, like Holmes' first three outings, by any means. This will certainly be the Bulldog's first serious challenge of the season, and at a good time too to bring them back down to earth and let them know they're human before they have a chance of getting too full of themselves. That's not a knock, it's just important for a team that's flying high to also get a reality check so they can mature while they're celebrating.

They're going to see a tough and steady fundamental 'D' from the Mustangs coming at them that they've yet to see, and it will certainly give them a good test at facing the frustrations that that kind of toughness can create. It's in that we'll see the Bulldogs grow up quick, and can only benefit them for the tall order challenges that they'll undoubtedly have down the road.

When all is said and done, the thing that should stick out between both teams is Holmes' depth and quickness, and that should carry them to victory, but my gut just won't let me believe it'll be by any more than 8-10 points.

Well I assume 9th region refs so I will think this could be another foul-a-thon as Holmes quickness and Brossart's inside presence could lead to a ton of foul calls. Might be a JV second quarter as any starters with 2 fouls will sit. So I would be hesitant to pick a winner until we know how the game is going to be called.

All officials statewide are supposed to call the hand check this year...not just 9th region officials.

Move your feet and play with your hands out and up and you eliminate those silly fouls. I've seen games in Eastern Kentucky, Central Kentucky, and Northern Kentucky this year and all officials have called the game the same way.

Teams/Fans/Coaches need to stop complaining. Last year everyone complained about it not being called and now people want to complain about it being called.

This game is still on, according to one of the Holmes players.

Thank you. The game should have been called like this all along. Everyone knows to keep your hands off people, so do it or it's a foul. Like you said players have forgotten, or never were taught, to move their feet Tired already of people blaming refs.

Hard to pick against Holmes at home. Holmes by 7-10.

Supposed to is the key phrase. All regions are not. And all refs within the 9th region are not. I'm not blaming the refs. You can't just direct them to call the game according to the rules. Otherwise I expect to see 150 calls for carrying the ball every game.
