Nativity Scene Etiquette

Featured Replies

I posted this on my FB page yesterday and was surprised that not many had heard of this so let me ask my fellow BGPers:

I was taught that when you put out a nativity scene as part of your holiday décor, the baby Jesus is not supposed to be put in the manger until midnight Christmas morning. As I drive around looking at everyone's decorations, more often than not, baby Jesus is already in the manger and it drives me crazy!!!!

Also, the Maji are not supposed to arrive until the twelfth day of His birth so they shouldn't be part of the décor until then either. Actually, you are supposed to have them somewhat off in the distance and move them closer each day until they finally arrive on the twelfth day. Finally, when they arrive, you are supposed to dress baby Jesus in purple to represent royalty.

Has anyone else heard of any of this or am I completely nuts? (Don't answer that last part)

No.

Yes.

I tought is was common practice not to place the baby Jesus statue in the manger until Christmas.

That's the way my mom's was when I was growing up. Looking back, it probably bugged the heck out of her, but I used to move the Magi across the rooms, gradually closer to the manger over the days between Christmas and Epiphany. There's no way she liked having those guys just sitting on a weird corner of the kitchen counter six days after Christmas but that's what I did.

Were you as OCD as I can be and not only have the Magi off in the distance up till Epiphany but also the Magi were coming from the Eastern part of the house? It took some creativity in getting them into a Westward direction to the living room but I manage. It is kinda odd for some people who are over that day the Magi are in the bathroom and someone is trying to go but feel funny with the Magi in there. I just tell them to move them behind the shower curtain.

^ :lol2: No, it wasn't that bad.

We always withheld the baby Jesus until Christmas Eve. We always let the Magi hang around the whole time, though.

Oh, and one year, one of the Magi stayed in the box. If memory serves correct, no where in the bible does it say three Magi, three gifts but does not specify three magi so one guy stayed home that year.

No. Yes.
What a shock! I agree with two of your comments in one post! LOL!

We always put everything up on the nativity scene all at the same time, usually around Thanksgiving. No big deal that everything went up at the same time, I guess those that are strict don't out Jesus in the nativity scene until months later, since some want to be OCD about being correct, and since Christ was not born on Dec 25th..... Hmmm :)

You're mocking me, aren't you...

We did this and also made it a parade to the Nativity. Any type of decorative statue or figurine was fair game. Mom was not so thrilled when her Hummels were part of it. :lol2:

I had never heard of the rules, but it does make sense.

I figured most didnt put baby Jesus out till last for fear of someone trying to steal it.

Question: Where do you put Baby Jesus prior to midnight Christmas morning?

Baby Jesus is inside his mommy, silly! Any 3 year old knows that!

Hmmmmm. I hadn't thought of that. Most assume he was born some time in the Spring so I guess I will now have to put up my nativity scene during Easter. LOL
