November 15, 201312 yr Grades are the most arbitrary teachers do and parents accept. It is not connected to what you truly learn, just what you can memorize in the vast majority of cases. I learned more in some classes where I got a C because I had to explain things, demonstrate things, problem solve etc. and an A in classes I do not remember anything because I could memorize and for the moment and output it from my brain. I don't want someone that knows all about plumbing, I want them to fix my plumbing and make it work.

They also have a sliding GPA system. For example, you only get a 4.0 for a class if you have a 98 , 99, or 100.

A 100-95 B 94-88 C 87-81 D 80-75 F Below 75 Failure Today: A 100-90 B 89-80 C 79-70 D 69-60 F Below 59 Failure Why did the scale change? Benefit of the student? Benefit of the teacher? Benefit of the school/system? I remember that system, though I think a D always went down to 70. We also had only one valedictorian and one salutatorian. Now most classes have about five valedictorians. Maybe a teacher could shed some light here. It seems to me that in my day, teachers were strict, parents were stricter and I had a great education. I might add, there was little government interference. Today it seems that the teachers are overwhelmed with government involvement. Grading is easier and parents leave a lot of responsibility on the schools. On the plus side, special education has been great for kids who need it. In my day, there was no such thing, and I can't imagine how many kids suffered because of it.
November 17, 201312 yr I honestly don't remember. I know that at UD in college I would just get a letter grade and a GPA. You had to go to your professors and ask them personally if you wanted more detail than that... Hah... not bothering. I don't recall Trinity's grading scale for letter grades. I've blocked out most of law school grading and I'm not going to start hacking at that mess with a machete. Law school… where getting a 100 question scantron exam of MBE questions back takes 3 weeks.
November 18, 201312 yr Interesting that at one school system someone could have all 90s and graduate with a 4.0 gpa while someone at another could have all 94s and finish with a 3.0 gpa. Kind of skewers the college application process.

November 18, 201312 yr I know at the high school level, the KEES money you get is directly linked to the grades you get. So by changing the grading system to a ten point scale, more students can earn higher amounts of KEES money.

I'll have to double check the next time I get a summary.
