Voice of Reason Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 We always have the "watered down" playoff discussion each year and this one was no different. A lot of site members think there should only be 2 teams per district in the playoffs. So let's take a look at the #3 and #4 seeds who have a real chance at getting a win in round one versus a #1 or #2 seed. Can any of those teams who "shouldn't be in the playoffs" get a win in round one? Who do you have as upset picks?
Jumper_Dad Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 Somerset in 2A is a #3 seed and has a more than realistic chance to win the region, in fact they are probably the favorite even though they will have to play all of the games on the road.
Jumper_Dad Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 This is an unique situation in that there was a 3 way tie, but tie breaker put Somerset as a #3 seed
Ram Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 Class 1A #3 Paintsville has a real good chance of upsetting #2 South Floyd.
CincySportsFan Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 From my understanding of the game thread, it sounds like Cooper may have lost their leading running back to an injury(?) in the Dixie game. Don't know how that will affect their play calling/execution from here on out...but, if I'm Anderson County, I don't let my players get caught up with playing a #4 seed with a 3-7 record. I like what the Jaguars did with their schedule this year. Unfortunately for them, it didn't result in a lot of "W"s, but it may have prepared them for the postseason. This could turn out to be one heck of a game.
Watusi Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 In 3A I don't see any 4 seeds with a legitimate chance, but there are some 3 seeds that could/should win. Lawrence Co is a heavy favorite over Magoffin Co. Corbin is a heavy favorite over Henry Co Trigg has a decent shot at Monroe Co Lewis Co could surprise Garrard Co
gchs_uk9 Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 This is an unique situation in that there was a 3 way tie, but tie breaker put Somerset as a #3 seed I was thinking about that this weekend. Somerset tried all summer to pick up a tenth game but were unsuccessful. If they had gotten any opponent on their schedule and beaten them, so long as that team wasn't winless, Somerset would have been the #2 seed over Danville. In order to get the #1 seed, however, they would have had to beat a team who finished 9-1, which would have made that a pretty tall order. Point being, playing 10 games is much better than playing 9 games.

Watusi Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 Looking at 4A, again I don't think any 4 seeds have a shot. Mercer Co, IMO, is a favorite over Knox Central Spencer Co could upset Nelson Co Doss could upset North Oldham
Watusi Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 I'm really glad this game is at home.I may be giving Lewis too much credit based on the past couple of years. I think Garrard is a heavy favorite. At first blush, looking at the brackets, I thought that if Garrard isn't completely focused that Lewis could maybe catch them off guard.
All Tell Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 6A #4 Manual and #3 St. X WILL win. Those quite honestly are the only "UPSETS" I see in the first round of 6A.
Voice of Reason Posted November 4, 2013 Author Posted November 4, 2013 5A has several 3/4 seeds that could pull upsets - Cooper vs. Anderson Co.; Montgomery Co. vs. Conner; a little more of a long shot Scott vs. Franklin Co.
MentschTrachtGottLacht Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 ..... VOR, you're really beating this "watered down" thing to a pulp today. I think we all now understand that you are good with the amount of teams in the playoffs. To be clear, I agree with you and am fine with how many make it, I'm just not likely to go passively put that thought into every other game thread.

I have seen several threads with posters complaining about lopsided playoff games that shouldn't be happening. Someone needs to present this side. There are quite a few quality teams that are 3 and 4 seeds who should get a chance to play in the postseason just like teams in all the other sports. This thread is showing that. My guess is if we look at the results of round one, there will be some 3/4 seeds that get wins, just like every other year. That by itself tells me going to 2 teams per district in the post season is wrong.

I agree with you 100% I tried my best to carry the flag for our side of the argument last year but some on the other side just don't like listening and come off with one line statements to toss back simply because they don't understand what we are talking about. The old lame line "Just in your games" gets old when that is the only thing they can fall back on. There are 3 way ties that happen a lot more than some want to acknowledge and when that happens all 3 teams deserve to get in period. What I never understood is why the same argument by the other side are never heard from when it comes to other high school sports where literally every team gets in. Cooper was that torch bearer last year, there will be another team this year to be that torch bearer and make it to a regional final that many would of rather not let that team in, in the first place. They talk about blowouts yet don't bother admitting there are blowouts in every round, whether it be a 1 vs 4 or a 1 vs 2, there will be blowouts. Let the kids play and those that whine about it, then don't go to the games, you aren't being forced to.
