Best tailgating venue

Featured Replies

The best I have been too is at Mayfield. You can tailgate right next to the field while the teams warm up and the booster club always has a big spread. Some people bring grills in the area and when the big match up's come it has a carnival atmosphere.

Frankfort has some nice tailgating. They have a group of guys every week that tailgate next to the fence that surrounds the game field.

.........

Expanding it from tailgating to gameday experience, my favorite in the state is Johnson Central.

It was in 2006 the best anyhere but with the new stadium it has taken that homey feel away.

Kinda partial because of my college days, but Commonwealth Stadium. How great would it be if UK and the KHSAA could throw a Kentucky football fan's smorgasbord one weekend?

Maybe have 3 big games on a Friday night (i.e., say we start at 6:00 with Lexington Catholic vs. Boyle County, 8:00 with Highlands vs. Trinity, and 10:00 with Bowling Green vs. Johnson Central). That night, everyone sticks around Lexington, maybe gets a room and does some shopping or has a nice brunch before the UK game the next day (maybe even against an EKU, Murray State, or WKU... I don't think the Louisville game would be a good one for this because it's a ticket that sells itself and the game wouldn't be played in Commonwealth every year).

I know this kind of event wouldn't fill Commonwealth, but you know it'd be a cool experience for the kids involved. It could also help promote UK football and Lexington as well.

Has anything like this ever been tried? Would using the field on a Friday night and then again on a Saturday night be problematic?

Not your traditional tailgate.

Mason County serves a meal for five bucks, they set up between the field and the practice field. Last week was hot dog, chili, DeSha's cornbread, chips, dessert and drink. Pretty good spread for $5.

Fort Thomas. Mio's.

Sadly Mios is gone. Rumors are another pizza place is going in. Maybe in time for next year...

You've been in Texas too long Joker. People here don't think like that. Football isn't showcased and promoted like that. Football is the distraction before basketball starts. Football if it gets too big will take away from all the outstanding academics we have going on at the local levels.

( I agree with you, I am just giving you some excuses I've heard)

That sounds good.

Best tailgating in our area is at Elder. The Panthers know how to party before a game.

Mayfield is the best I have ever seen anywhere other than UK. Vechicles park in the west endzone and to the 15 yardline on the visitors side. If a truck they are usually backed in and load with seating. Some bring their pop up canopies, a few show up in RV's though they are not allowed to park on the front row. There is a large grill on site that is avaialble and the fans down there have a free meal all that is ask is that you bring a side dish. Occasionally there is a fee if the meal is a expensive one like a pig roast we have. Typical meals would be burgers or chicken, fish, it varies. There is ample area for kids who play within viewing distance of their parents. The best feature us that you are right on the field just behind a fence and there is no track which puts you really near the action. There are restooms and concessions adjacent in case you don't like the menu.

What makes it the best is the sheer number of Mayfield fans that participate, it is a long standing tradition for a very large number of fans

That's a good idea.

For some of the "bowl" games at some of the mountain schools, I've seen the same thing done with chili or a fish fry.

Having gone to many state tournaments and stayed at the Radisson, something I observed was that Mason County never seemed to be a school you'd want to bet on losing a party.

Wish the Texans had more of a love for roundball myself. Maybe we could have some kind of trade off of sports fanatics to balance things out.

The former biergarden at Newport Stadium wasn't really a "tailgating" type place. However, it was a great place to enjoy food and beverage during the game.
