Congrats to HHS on playing a great game Vs. a very good opponent. Pity more 6A/5A NKy schools won't play the local GCL teams like CovCath and HHS do each year!

Highlands Defense was outstanding imo.

 

They basically held Elder to 21 pts and the 9 was not on them. They held Shroyer to under 100 yds and not many teams have done that in a while.

They scored an obvious safety to their credit and played basically 30 mins of the game on the wrong side of the 50..Those are facts imo..

 

Ramsey got his yds passing and Iam ok with that. I wouldnt necessary call out the DB's and say that Ramsey had his way with them. If anyone knows Highlands philosophy regarding pass defense they would understand.

 

Oh yeah, Jackson Bardo scored two picks in the game.

 

I would take Highlands alll day long in a game like this if they can pull off what they did on Defense...Just sayin:thumb:

Sweep, What were Ramsey's numbers passing? How many times was he sacked? He could have baked a cake back there. I'm not knocking the defense just telling you what I saw. He threw like a sophomore but the Bluebird DB's made him look like Peyton Manning. Not trying to offend, just is what it is. Birds will still run through 4A without question. I think the Bluebird offense is of Moeller's caliber but the Moe defense is why they won by 21. Highlands D just could not stop them. They left it all on the field last night and gave it their best. Good bunch of kids for sure.

The 2 Elder guys standing with us in the same end zone said.....It was a catch!!!....I thought so too. When the Ref awards HHS with the catch, it's game-set-match. HHS would of had to play some good D to keep Elder contained but we will never know....Great game and darn proud of our boys!

I have watched the replay of the play from the two angles available. The one from the press box is no help. It shows the back of the receiver. The second angle is from the endzone. You get a really good look from this angle.

 

Vennemen catches the ball about 2 feet from the ground by fully extending his body. He lands at the 12 with his arms under the ball. You can slow down the film and go frame by frame, the problem is that it is not a high resolution picture. You can not tell if his arms were spread far enough apart to allow the ball to touch the ground when he hits. If it wasn't a catch it was just a part of the ball scraping the grass between his forearms. It was one heck of an effort.

 

The official was in pretty food position. He was about 2 yards behind the spot where Vennemen hit the ground and about 3 yards to the left. His angle was from the side of the play. The only thing that makes me think the official was sure of the call was how quickly he made the call. No indecision, he immediately signaled that the ball hit the ground.

 

You would need NFL caliber cameras perfectly placed to get a definitive answer on this one, it is that close.

I wouldn't put it on all the db's. There was one db that definitely struggled more than the others all night to either cover or tackle.. Highlands D only gave up 23pts. The Birds D was pretty dang good last night..

Hayes could have helped out in the secondary for sure last night, not sure why he was wasted on the bench. If I'm Highlands I'm getting him some snaps back there leading up to the Elder game knowing that Harris will stay on the field most, if not all of the game.

You ever think that the plan was to let him "bake a cake back there"? To keep him in the pocket and make him beat HHS with his arm? To his credit, he did. Tough loss.

Ramsey is/was the X factor, that's why I said not to sleep on him in the prediction thread. I think Elder expected Highlands to somewhat contain Schroer, he is banged up and was averaging less than 2 yards per carry in his previous two games leading up to Highlands. Ramsey is a gamer and is gonna be fun to watch the next 2 years.

For those expecting this to slow Highlands down you are insane. Highlands will win their next 5-6 games whatever is left counting playoffs by an average of 28 points.

BTW, why is it that in high school a pass interference call is 15yds and not marked at the spot of the foul? Seems like this rule can be used to an advantage when playing deep ball proficient passing squads.

I cant say one way or another for sure without replay and technology but I can tell you that if you can't tell running through the film you did then there isnt a chance in hell that the ref saw something for sure...

 

Part of me wants to say he saw something but part of me says he was wrong. Sorry folks, HS refs aint that good and if they are they then they are at the wrong level...Just sayin

 

Had he signaled a catch it would have been hard for Elder to dispute it as well imo.

This play falls under the double play ball in baseball when you only have a plate umpire, the SS can sweep miss 2nd base by 3 ft and throw to 1st to complete the deuce and will get the call at 2nd 100% of the time simply because the umpire is not in position to see it and gives the player the benefit of the doubt...:thumb:
