October 22, 201313 yr What's interesting about this is: 1. Rex tipped off the refs and asked them to look for the push on the play in question, AND 2. Rex may have done so based on information shared by his brother, Rob Ryan, who is the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints, who'd played the New England Patriots the week before. Was it hypocritical of Ryan to point the "pushing" out to the referees when his team did it as well? Even more importantly, if he was made aware of it by his brother, Rob Ryan, did Rob Ryan violate his fiduciary duty to the Saints organization by tipping him off? I ask this because one of the tiebreakers in the NFL playoffs is opponents' strength of schedule. IF Rob Ryan made Rex aware of the situation and the Jets used it to win the game, it could hurt the Saints' playoff chances/seeding. Does it matter? Do you think the Jets' staff noticed this, or would have noticed it, on their own anyway? Edited October 22, 201313 yr by JokersWild24
October 22, 201313 yr I have no problem with anything he did. If his team did it and the officials didn't call it that's not his issue. He asked them to enforce a rule.
October 22, 201313 yr If all of that is true, I don't find a single thing wrong with it, especially #1.

October 22, 201313 yr I see no issue at all. He's just trying to make sure the refs are aware of a possible penalty.
October 22, 201313 yr Sounds like a smart move on his part. You play to win the game. If telling the refs to keep their eyes on a potential infraction helps his team then I'd be more concerned as to why he wouldn't alert the refs.
October 22, 201313 yr ................ Every coach in the country, in every sport, uses the "watch them, they....." Zero wrong with this in any way.

October 22, 201313 yr As much as it pains me to say this it appears Rex Ryan out coached Bill Belichick and it cost New England the game. And good thread Joker, I came to this forum to start a thread on this topic.
October 22, 201313 yr Author I'm confused by the bolded statement. Fixed it. Trying to do too many things at once. The Jets had apparently done the same thing this season, but weren't penalized for it.
October 22, 201313 yr Author Thanks 'Ru. And just to reiterate, I wanted to draw attention to the fact that Rob Ryan could have had a conversation with Rex where he said something to the effect of, "we got screwed when New England beat us on that last second field goal... they "pushed" on that field goal attempt with around 2:30 left in the 4th quarter... if the stripes had called a 15 yard penalty, we'd have had a first down and could have scored... you should stay on the refs about calling that". That was kind of insinuated in some of the articles if you read between the lines. Of course, it's entirely possible that the Jets staff picked that up in the tape themselves, and/or that they would have picked it up eventually even if Rob had not mentioned it to Rex. Where it gets a little murky though is the fact that it ended up being something that could effect the Saints' playoff chances. Because of the NFL's procedures with tiebreakers and strength of schedule, it could end up being such that the Saints are hurt by Rob pointing that out to Rex and changing the outcome of a game. New Orleans plays both New England and the Jets, so the chances of it working out this way are fairly slim, but are there nonetheless.
October 22, 201313 yr Author I have no problem with Rex Ryan telling the refs to look out for the penalty, despite his own team doing it, by the way. I think that's just part of coaching.

Agreed...to a point. From here on out Rex can't argue the fact that "everybody does it, and nobody gets called on it". So, if they catch the Jets doing it...he's got no one else to blame for putting a spotlight on the issue, other than himself.
