"At least five families of U.S. military members killed during in Afghanistan over the weekend were given a double-whammy by federal officials: Not only have your loved ones died, but due to the government shutdown, you won’t receive a death benefit.

 

The benefit is $100,000 and is wired to family members of the killed military member within 36 hours of the death. The so-called “death gratuity” is aimed at paying for funeral costs and to help with those living expenses normally covered by the soldier’s paycheck.

I would go as far as to limit service in DC to one term, with no life long retirement benefit. Go to DC, represent those that elected you, go home and back about whatever you were doing before you were elected.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, our government does not and has not ever done enough for our veterans. And it is shameful.

Re: " ... best for the country": Sounds good on paper, but doesn't work that way in real life. If you want to run for Congress, you first have to sell your soul to the devil to win your primary and the endorsement of the people with the money. Politics is messy and sordid. I would also point out that term limits would boost the clout of paid congressional staffers and deep-pocket PACs.
