Is it time for Beechwood to stop playing Covington Catholic? Men vs. Boys?

Featured Replies

The whole premise of this thread is a joke and based on non-facts. Guru has let it distaste for Rash and the Beechwood program completely destroy his reasoning skills. I watched the game live and now twice on DVR. I still believe the same thing I felt on the drive home. Every turnover was self-inflicted and had nothing to do with "Men Popping Boys". Please tell me which turnovers were caused by "Men Popping boys" heck, which ones were even cause by a defender making a hit. While I certainly know that CCH is the more talented team, Beechwood lost that game by not taking care of the football, dropped passes and poor coaching choices. Not even the dropped passes were the result of great defensive play. There were at least 8 drops including the interception off a tipped ball Idefinitely a great grab by Way) Most happening on key downs. Beechwood gave the football away and did not execute. As a result, the more talented CCH team was able to take advantage. The talent difference (like the inujuries) is also magnified when the the talent is playing on both sides of the ball instead of just one. The fact of the matter is Beechwood lost that game and two players from CCH were glad to take it.

I don't think W and L are the most important thing in this game. I would love to Win it, but it is a great rivalry and had been close enough to make both teams truly care about and WANT to win it. Clearly its a great rivalry and should continue.

I have to hand it to Guru. Some of the threads he has started the past couple of weeks are just excellent marketing. Kudos for taking care of your business. Even at the cost of diminishing the value of your opinion.

Didn't see the game. Probably was the same gesture.

Not sure what you mean about the numbers. 9-1 is the CCH/BW number.

Sorry, I thought you were referring those numbers to another series. You would have been shortchanging CovCath a bit

In the last 10 years? I can think of 2 CCH wins in 2006.

When were the two titles? If he had won a third and the three of them were spread out then I am with you, however Beechwood didn't win the third and the two titles were shortly after he replaced Yeagle, correct? If so, you could argue he won with Yeagle's program.

I have made the point many times on here and, frankly, don't want to have to research it again but here are some facts I can recall. The fact is Rash has been as successful in his 7 years as Yeagle was in his last 7 years. In the five years before Rash became coach, Yeagle won 1 title. Many people are delusional about the program because Yeagle had the incredible run in the 90's. Sorry, people, times have changed. Spread offenses now rule. Platoon football has arrived at the big schools. Other programs have caught up with the commitment level required to be successful and they caught up with Yeagle. Oh, by the way, Yeagle lost to Mayfield too.

Question for the CovCath faithful...

Did CovCath really ever have any concerns leading up to this game that BW could or would present a challenge or issues and that CovCath would not dominate this game even on their worst nite this yr?

I would put this game in the line of HHS wanting to play NCC.

In Ft. Mitchell and the surrounding area it is a huge game, no matter who is suppose to win. Family Vs. Family, neighbor Vs. neighbor, co-worker Vs. co-worker, heck parishioner Vs. parishioner and after the game is over, everybody sits down to some eats and drinks and talks about how bad the stripes were. It's a fun night for the kids, their parents and the neighborhoods.

If you were on the field after the team meetings you would have seen the players playing around with each other, family gathering together some with Blue some with Red and the pictures taken with both Red players and Blue players being taken together.

No, don't stop the game as IMHO the community enjoys it too much and it doesn't matter if you wear Red or Blue it's a fine night or Saturday afternoon when everybody gets together!

You have no clue sometimes. Obviously reading comprehension is not your strong suit. Where did you ever get this was my opinion? It was from the game thread:

My opinion about Beechwood and their coaching staff is as follows in this thread:

"Beechwood has a fine 1A football team and a solid coaching staff but these are not your big brothers Tigers."

I realize you are upset and you have been drinking Tiger Aid by the gallon for 40 years but get your facts straight next time.

I know you addressed this to the CCH faithful, but I will provide what I believe was the consensus Beechwod fan view. I believe most Tiger fans thought Beechwood had the best chance at winning in the past 3 years. No one expected to win, they just thought BW had a solid chance at winning. The big fear, CCH pounding the ball and BW turnovers. Both of those happened. The hope before the game - no turnovers, Fieger could be effective enough passing to put up 21+ points and that would be enough because the Tigers could hold CCH to 21 or less.

Finally, IMO any CCH fan who had no concerns coming into the game is more of a fan than someone who knows football. I am sure every CCH fan expected to win and they should have. But there were enough uncertainties that there should have been some concern.

If they had no concerns after the first quarter, then they really live in a world with nothing but Colonel blue skies. :woot:

Old Sports Dad, just to be fair, the premise of this thread is 100% based on non-facts. Additionally, this wasn't Guru's opinion about the development / size issue, it was mine. He threw it out there for the group, and, I'd say the masses have spoken clearly and disagree with me (which is fine). I don't know Guru's issue with Rash, and I don't care, but either way, it had nothing to do with this thread. Frankly, I took this thread more of him wanting to get some opinions on the topic.

I, like you, have watched the game twice since and I'm left with the same thought about the sheer size of the players competing. I was hoping we'd have a photo album from the game with which to all look at objectively, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

Regardless, the series is certainly a fun one in Northern KY, and it is especially the case in my household. I also trust those that say hey, the next two years will be battles that Beechwood may well win. I look forward to those competitive games.

In closing, if you want to further hammer away at me, have at it -- but this wasn't based on Guru's opinions so shots at him should actually be aimed my way.

Thanks.

Beechwood was once blessed with huge linemen who were tough and dedicated. Players like Holderman and Wolley don't come along in bunches the way they once did. Ask National Defense Player of the Year Dennis Johnson how it felt to have Holderman on top of him or the Yeast kid from Harrodsburg who went over to the Beechwood bench before the game and ran his mouth. He lasted all of one play before he got his bell rung and tool a seat. Beechwood has had several really excellent freshman teams and expectations were high. For some reason, the linemen who were as big as there opponents when they were freshmen, grew vey little after that. We all know the cliché about not being able to teach them to grow. The facts do not support an argument that CovCath easily handled even the best Yeagle coaches Beechwood teams. I know that because I was there for several of them.

The Beechwood linemen are totally dedicated. They lift religiously and they hang together when not at school. My daughter and another parent have them at their home as a group on a regular basis. Her grocery bill can attest to this. My grandson's father was MVP in the East-West all-star game. He got the award for blocking Frank Jacobs and limiting his effectiveness. He is 6'2" and 275. His son (my grandson) is 5'8 and 190 and plays the line. I am short so you can guess who gets the blame. He is also a straight A student, but I am told I get no credit for that.

^ Patveep ... I still think Beechwood puts out very good linemen. This year's line is just so young they haven't matured and had enough time in the weight room. Last year's line had good size and good talent:

Taylor Overstreet OT 6'4" 230 (195 as soph.)

Corey Biddle OG 5'10" 230 (185 as soph.)

Joe Macejko C 5'11" 275 (260 as soph)

Chad Evans OG/C 5'10" 240 (200 as soph.)

Dan Middendorf OT 6'1" 295 (275 as soph.)

The guards and tackles were seniors and played on the N. Ky. All Star team. They were just what you said - big linemen who were tough and dedicated. They all worked very hard to get better and became a very good line by their senior year. Coach Brilz knows how to coach and develop an offensive line. He has coached 3 linemen at Beechwood who went on to play D1 ball. This year's line will do what Beechwood players did under Yeagle and what they continue to do under Rash. They will work hard in the off season and get bigger and better. Next year, I expect the line to be one of the strengths of the team.

To the contrary. I'm not upset at all. Disappointed, yes, but definitely not upset. Me being upset would have meant that I had Expected to win rather than simply hope to win. We have exchanged many PMs about by position so I'm not sure how you can say I'm "drinking the Tiger-Aid".

I am frustrated with people pretending that these boys are no where near the talent and essentially don't belong on the same field as CCH. Because of that, I did jump the gun on you a bit because I thought these were your words. The difference this year was one player, the platooning that you mentioned and also that Beechwood Staff doesn't seem to understand how to utilize the simply above average talent to give the top players like Max Shover a rest. 37 coaches on the sidelines and nobody is managing the personnel.

My apologies to you for anything directed at you specifically.

We are good OSD.

As to the thread, I do NOT believe it is the Men vs. the Boys and the next couple of years Beechwood should be plenty competitive. However, looking at the last two or three games and thinking into the future I think this is a series that the Beechwood powers that be need to consider carefully.

And again if you are CovCath, do whatever you have to do to keep this series alive.

I believe the underlying issue with the "MEN vs boys" comment is exactly wht you mentioned (highlighted in bold). It comes across that CCH is much superior than BW in football and that these kids at BW don't belong on the same field. In my opinion, it is wrong to say that because BW is one of the best small schools in the state of KY that is ABLE to compete with much larger schools. Their history and records speak for itself. CCH has had the upperhand as of late however there was a time before that where CCH was down and BW dominted. I believe fans are failing to recognize that talent pools come in waves. Now CCH has a much better chance of landing consistent talent pools than does BW, given the school size. That is just pure facts. Not only that but BW has their best players going both ways, they have to in order to be at their best, it's just the reality. CCH has the luxury of being able to rest top tier talent such as Sam Dressman only palying offense.

It's tough for both schools to lose to each other because they are separated by a few miles and as the Old Guy mentioned there are so many kids/parents/coaches/fans that all have relation of some sort to each other. There are kids that start at BW and leave to go to CCH and kids that start in CCH feeder schools and leave to go to BW. It's a rivalry with a record close to .500 between the too over the course of them playing each other. Why in the world would anyone want to stop that special tradition?

As far as the size of the kids from each school I believe it's standard to think that CCH should have bigger players. The population of 600 boys is so significant to BW's. Reality is they will generally be a bigger team. Just because they are bigger at some positions doesn't mean they shouldn't play. Sometimes smaller teams are better than larger teams so lets not forget that as well. I don't believe any player on BW was simply outmatched due to CCH size except for the line. BW defensive backs/LB's were generally the same as CCH. Same with WR's, RB's, and QB's. The only noticeable difference that everyone in the stands and watching on TV could see was #9 Sam Dressman. 6'5'' 200+ lbs. that is a MAN out there. Other than that you could certainly say the line at CCH was bigger than BW but that's about it, IMO.

With all of that being said and comparing these two particular teams it is my belief that BW as a whole have just as good if not better WR's/DB's. I would give the edge to CCH in LB's and both OL and DL just because of size and depth. But position players at QB, RB, WR, and DB's BW is just as good if not better than CCH in those areas. The main difference when comparing the two is simply #9, period. Best player on the field hands down.
