While I don't agree with Reed Johnson's actions on the situation I completely agree with Freeman and McCann. Gomez had no reason to act that way after a home run and if he did want to act that way then he should expect the other team to jaw back at him I see nothing wrong with the incident other then Johnson.

 

Gomez's reason btw is that in 21 AB against Maholm he had been HBP twice. The last time they played back in June, Maholm hit him on the knee. That's why when he rounds third he's pointing at his knee. That's why I'm saying that regardless of what the Braves did he was planning to make a scene. That's why he was so crazy over the top intense. It's not on the video in this thread, but he swung so hard (and missed) on the first strike that nearly fell down. Until they explained later in the broadcast about the history I was convinced Gomez was on something when he came to the plate. He was amped from the word go.

I don't see any other catchers doing this (maybe happened' date=' but I haven't seen it). I have never seen one stand 1/4 of the way down the line and block the path of the runner. I have seen many catchers mouth off and fire back at them verbally. I have seen many teams take care of it by plunking someone. I think he's a hot head, just like Gomez. This takes you out of your game. They scored 0 runs in the game. Doesn't mean McCann a vad player, in fact he is great IMO.[/quote'] There's a lot about it I've never seen. No, I've never seen a guy stand in the base path, but as I said, I've never seen a guy take it as far as Gomez did either.

 

If you're looking for the most devastating effect of the event and a big reason IMO why they didn't score, it was Freeman getting ejected. He was their #3 batter and was replaced by Dan Uggla. You take your best hitter out and replace him with your worst.

 

I also think if they had simply waited and plunked him that Gomez would have tried to murder him on the mound.

Only time I've ever seen a HR count without the hitter touching the plate.

Completely disagree. This team is very close and they stand up for each other and they don't take anything from anyone. Win or lose I love that about this team. This is the most fire and passion I've seen from a Braves club in a long time.

First of all, he never stopped and looked at it. He dropped the bat and started walking, big deal. Get over it. If I crushed a ball like that, I would do the same thing.

That's your takeaway? I don't think you're looking closely enough. I don't think he cares about the homerun, he cares about the guy jawing at his pitcher the entire way around the bases. He did what a catcher is supposed to do.

 

McCann was the first person to say something, so "jawing at his pitcher" doesn't really hold water. If the Braves don't open their mouths, this is likely a non-issue.

 

And as far as what a catcher is supposed to do, he made his team look like fools. WAY worse than Gomez did.
