How many teams have won a state championship with no D-1 players on the team?

 

I'm fairly sure that Russell just did it. I don't think Russell has had a D-1 player in the past 5 years. Clark may be D-1 next year although.

but Id be willing to bet there are a lot of teams that fit that criteria - not to diminish Russells title in anyway.

 

Its why I love football best. I think its the ultimate team game where a superstar or powerful team can be shut down by less talented players who play together with more effort,cohesiveness, etc , the least influenced by referees calls and coaches actions on the sidelines.(Yes there are always xceptions so no need to detail them for us).

 

No matter what those on the other forums say, the funny shaped ball is the BEST :thumb:

Since 1984 Beechwood has had only 2 or 3 DI players:

 

Tackett in 84 and Hergott in 94/95? I think thats it.

 

It's been done many,many,many times I'm sure.

What about 4A or 3A?

I could be wrong but I think that Boyle's '03 champs did not have any Div. 1 players on it. Brandon Smith went to 1-AA Western Kentucky.

 

All of their other teams had at least one Div. 1A player on them.

Trinity very rarely has any D-I's.

In 75 when the Birds won it, we had no D1 players on the team; or D2 or NAIA players either. Heck only two of us played any college ball at all. I went to Centre and played three years (not my freshman year) and Dave Morris went to Rose Hulman (sp?), two at the time not very good D3 programs. What made that interesting is the fact that Centre and Rose Hulman played in the same conference and I lined up against Dave each year that I played. Two of the three years I played against Dave, Gil Gelbke, a ref from Ft. Thomas who had reffed some of our Highlands games, reffed the Centre vs Rose Hulman games. Seemed really odd at the time, I guess its not so unusual now that I think of it.

The only other ones I can think of would be Mercer (99), Wulfeck (97?) and Joe Brady (02) who started in the 99 state championship game as a sophomore.

Yes..they count! What I mean is you would think with how strong Trinity is year in and year out that they would produce more D-1 players EVERY year.

I don't think that Bourbon Co. had any D-1's on that '97 team, not sure if they had any 1-AA's for that matter.

A shame that they have fallen on such hard times.................

I believe May and Heineman were I-AA. Look at Henry Clay's team this year and their D-I signees and then look at Trinity's D-I signees and let me know what you come up with.
