State Championship without D-1 players.

Featured Replies

Fuqua went to wofford. Not D1. They were in seperate classes as well, and they did not win a state championship that year. They should have. They lost to lex. catholic on a hail mary after Danville beat them by three td's during the regular season. Now, that was a team with 4 div 1 players on it. Danville beat the eventual state champion by 30. Bourbon county finished 4th in our district.

Sorry, I misunderstood.

When I think of "D-1" I INCLUDE 1AA because those kids get full-rides (and Fuqua, as it turned out was EASILY true "D-1" material since he was a starter his True Frosh year and 1st team All Southern Conference his Sophomore year.

If you include FULL-SCHOLARSHIP PLAYERS (meaning all D-1 kids including 1AA kids), I think Danville would have quite a few title years with multiple kids (Morgan/Baughman, Penix/Turner, etc.)??? The main point of this thread is about teams that win it without much talent. To have several kids go 1AA on full-rides means they're pretty talented (THIS ISN'T TAKING ANYTHING AWAY FROM THE COACHING THERE...IT'S BEEN OUTSTANDING TOO!).

Also, despite the way this thread is titled, I read your original post to say that there's NEVER been a season with two D-1 kids at the same time ("since 1988 Danville has had 5 D1 Players. None of them were on the team at the same time"). Not just in years they'd won the title.

But, the fact that they were in separate CLASSES doesn't matter...this thread asked about two being on the same TEAM (I take to mean they were actually STARTERS on the same team).

Didn't one of those teams that both those guys would've been on win the state title?

Also, what years was Donnie Redd there? Did he not overlap with ANY other D-1 player?

when you say d1 players on the same team I mean graduate in the same class. When donnie redd was a senior i believe chester ford was a sophmore. His sophmore year he was not like he was his senior year. Get my point? Since 1988 i bet there have not been more then 10 guys go either div 1 or 1aa. 1aa guys, Joe Ganns(eastern), Ryan trachsel(murray state) Fuqua(wofford) baughman (western) Penix ( eastern) Collin Rogers(Furman). Thats about it. That would make 11 D1 and 1aa. Now, there are a lot of guys that could have but didnt bc of grades.

I don't want to hijack the thread but I would debate that supposition because Boyle beat the Admirals that year and went undefeated in the Regular season behind Neal Brown (UK) and Johnson (Georgetown) and a young Leffew. But the Rebels fell in the playoffs under the spell of Bourbon.

The Pikeville teams of 87-88-89 were the most dominant ive ever seen. And I think only one player went D1 (Mickey Webster, UK). The rest went 1aa or lower. I could be wrong but Mickey was the only one I knew of.

The only other ones I can think of would be Mercer (99), Wulfeck (97?) and Joe Brady (02) who started in the 99 state championship game as a sophomore.

Scott Zahler signed with Miami of Ohio after we won state in 94.

The ads went 9-1 in the regular season. I have the game on tape. Danville outplayed them. just lost onthe scoreboard. Turnovers, a dropped touchdown pass to clifford berry, a tipped pass in the secondary down the sideline that happened to fall right in timmy crawfords hands that went for a td. I know all about it. In my opinion the ads were the best team in AA that year. Like i said, they beat the state champion by 30.
