Marvin is not the worst coach. You can't be with back to back playoff losses. He isn't the best either. You are correct mediocre is perfect word to describe him . But you can't call someone mediocre or average then in the same post say he is the worst coach. Those two statements conflict with each other.

And this is why Marvin keeps his job. Accepting of mediocrity. Bengals management as well as the fans are guilty of this.

There are only 32 NFL head coaching jobs in the entire world. You make it sound as if Marvin went dumpster diving and did Cincinnati a favor in coming here as head coach. To answer your question, yes I'd take the head coaching job in a heart beat. Many other coaches would do the same. You can talk about how bad it is to work for Mike Brown, actually I think it's the opposite. With Mike Brown you have job security that no other owner gives his head coaches in the league.

Every team goes into their season with 1 goal, to win a SB. So I ask you, what is the difference in not making the playoffs or losing in your first playoff game? In the big picture, there is no difference. This isn't like only 4 teams make the playoffs each year out of 32. A third of the teams make the playoffs, so unlike some on here, to me making the playoffs isn't some great stretch nor should it ever feel like an amazing accomplishment. For Bengals fans I can understand how they think and feel that making back to back playoffs is awesome, but many teams make back to back playoffs...don't fool yourself as if it is something that hardly occurs.

All of that is well and good, and to some degree, true. However, I'm a fan. I have no stake in them winning the Super Bowl whatsoever, besides the fact that I'd enjoy it immensely. It is entertainment to me, period. I'd MUCH rather have 10 enjoyable Sundays watching them win, followed by 10 Mondays where I go to work and guffaw with my co-workers about a win, even if they flame out in the 1st round of the playoffs. This Super Bowl or bust thing is nice for the media, but let's be serious, the difference between 3-13 and 10-6 with a 1st round loss is immense to a fan.

 

It is like when people say a college basketball team that went 25-6 had a disappointing season if they miss the Final Four. Makes me laugh. You had 25 nights where you hung with family and friends high-fiving a successful game....but sadly fell short in March.

 

People have lost perspective -- I'm not saying you in particular Hellbird, your thought that it is Super Bowl or bust is common among folks.

Being one of I believe 4 or 5 teams in the whole NFL to make the playoffs 3 out of the last 4 years says otherwise on how easy it is to make the playoffs. Especially with all the parity in this league with how bad teams could turn good rather quickly. To be now a consistent playoff team with its current foundation is an accomplishment for this franchise. However they do need to take that next step, and that might not be with Marvin. I agree he should have been fired after 2008 and 2010. Now if he doesn't take the team to the next step this year, then once again I believe he should be fired too.
