MLB's One Game Playoff Round

Featured Replies

What does everyone think about the one game playoff that baseball has in place now? I really do not like it at all. I do like the wild card teams facing each other first because that rewards a division winner. I think the wild card playoff should be a 3 game series. The last wild card hosts game one and the better record wild card gets games 2 and 3. Baseball is the most unpredictable sport there is and a one game wild card has no meaning or value to me. Anything can happen in one game in baseball. I say a 3 game playoff for the wild cards, a 5 game series in the next round, and then the league championships and world series should be 7 games. What does everyone else think?

I agree 100%. Throw the human error factor into that 1 -game "anything can happen" theory and it would be very bad. What happens if a game comes down to a call like some that we have seen this year? One being a homerun against the Indians that was called a double even after video replay showed it hitting 4-5 ft into the stands. You play 162 games to make it and then could be sent home after 1 mistake.. Doesnt seem quite right

^ Absolutely. It's awful.

That's right. I mean, what if some umpire decided a ball that was halfway to the wall was suddenly subject to the infield fly rule? Boy, people sure would be upset.....

^^^HMMMMM... where have i seen that happen??

Agree, a minimum of 3 games. Of course, I do have an issue with baseball running to the end of October.

I like it. If you don't want to be subject to the random nature of one game, win the division...

Well sure. But MLB has thrown in that 5th team now ($) so I think it would be fairer to have those two wildcards play best of 3. But as I posted, I think the playoffs extend baseball too long as it is. Honestly, I probably prefer it the way it was.

I like it as well. If my team is the #1 wildcard I'm not a huge fan. If my team is the #2 then I am. A few years ago, the Reds wouldn't make the playoffs if the season ended today and that is a shame considering their record.

HATE IT. You play 162 games to get in the playoffs and your done in 1 game.

Best of 3 at least.

Count me in as one that doesn't like the one game format. However, some things to be considered...1.) a tie-breaking system to avoid any "play-in" games for a wildcard spot. You play 162 regular season games, and that's it. 2.) Don't let TV control the dang scheduling. Otherwise, a potential 3 game series (for both leagues) will add an entire week to the playoffs. I don't care how you do it, but get it done in 3 days.

It should be the best three records get a BYE and the 4th and 5th best records play 1 game. If the Pirates, Cards, Reds, all have the best records why should they not get to sit?

I like the concept but 1 game isn't good. It should be a best of 3 series.

Teams play way to many games to have it decided in 1 game, especially if they are cheated in that game.

Yeah, I say old way or a 3 game play off. If the format is going to be this way own up to it. One game shouldn't sum up 162 game season.

I agree. The one-game playoff is exciting in that we have an instant game seven before the division winners even see the field in the post-season.
