University Christian is ranked #71 in the state of Florida

Anyone who thought they were a very good team or even a good opponent for Highlands is smoking something special.

I'll admit it: I was expecting much more out of UC based on what I was told by my Jacksonville friend. What I think he and I both failed to consider was the fact that a) a lot of their transfers had only had a limited amount of time to learn and fit into the UC system; and b) the impact that UC's failure to have a scrimmage game under their belt would have on their performance against Highlands. Perhaps I'll be wrong again, but I expect the UC team at the end of the year to be dramatically different than the UC team we saw play Highlands.

I think it's pretty much conventional wisdom that the degree of improvement from game to game is the greatest between the first game and the second game. Our "first game" was Trinity. UC's first game was against us. I think that had a huge impact on the outcome.

I was also surprised that UC played so many players both ways. I know it's a small school, but it's not your typical small school, in that it gets a lot of juniors and seniors transferring in each year. I anticipated 2 or 3 UC players going both ways. At the first change of possession for UC, we counted 7 staying on the field. I knew right then UC was doomed. Perhaps the "newness" with the UC system prevented a lot of those transfers getting on the field much against Highlands.

Actually even before the change of possession, I was feeling good about the game. Several of their bigger linemen (with the exception of No. 54) had some pretty big bellies hanging over their pants. I expected the linemen to be in much better shape than they were. Perhaps they could have gotten away with that if they were playing a school that played their linemen both ways, but it wasn't going to work against Highlands.

So yeah, I was one of those predicting a much better game out of UC and I was wrong. If anything, my inaccurate prediction proved a point I've long made: until you've watched a team play, it's very hard to predict how they will match up against another team. Not having had the opportunity to watch tape on this year's UC team probably played a huge role in my predictions (that, and of course the fact that I'm notoriously from the Lou Holtz camp of lavishing great praise on upcoming opponents. LOL.). Since I don't smoke, that couldn't have been the cause (although southbird may have snuck something into my dip).

UC update. UC continues to roll...in Florida. Given up 10 points total in 3 games since Highlands scored 42 in opener on them.
