My guess is he will turn down several more schools before the one he just cannot turn down makes the phone call. The thing is, the better UofL does, the schools will be calling sooner and the quality of those schools' football programs will be better.

By the way Deuce, I love talking sports with you, Getslow, rockmom, and the rest of the Louisville crowd. Very knowledgable and respectful fans who usually have very, very well-founded and reasonable positions.

 

On game day, I'll be wearing my blue, but I still know that you Louisville folk are alright.

If I am an AD and I can handle the faculty and academicians and I am able to retain/get a great coach, then paying him an exra $1 million should not be a big deal. The pub to the school is worth that. (I don't necessarily ethically agree with this line of thinking but that is the reality today of big-time college athletics.) I commented at the WKU-UK game that Petrino probably made himself a couple of hundred grand as a result of the Hilltoppers' performance.

I'm starting to think he is going anywhere. He won't leave for anything less than a top 5 job if he did leave. Tennessee has all the resources in the world and could easily be an SEC power again, and he turned them down. Even with how bad they have been lately that's still a high profile job in the SEC.

 

The only high profile job that I can really see having any chance of being open after this year is Texas. However, he wouldn't leave for them. They're on the same tier as Tennessee and we saw how that played out.

 

Strong just seems like a great dude and he seems to be different from most college coaches in the fact that he is loyal. He's an old school guy who has strong core values. I don't think he'll leave unless his family wanted to anyways.

They also cannot fill a recruiting class without leaving the state. Mack Brown has slipped some, but I remember when Texas would have 20 something commits when the other schools were just getting started.

Louisville moves into the ACC next year, so I think it would take a big, big name school to lure him away. The Cards are going to be one of the top teams in an BCS league year in and year out. Because the ACC has strong ties to Florida, it's only going to get easier now for Strong to use his ties in that state to get kids to the Ville. He's got a heck of a gig.

 

I really think he'd be half crazy to leave Louisville unless it was to Florida, or FSU, maybe Miami. I only say those schools because of his ties to the state. None of those jobs are likely to open anytime soon.

 

If he did bolt though, the first name that came to mind for me is Tuberville. UC is stuck between a rock and a hard place conference wise, and Tuberville is a proven winner who is a safe, solid hire.

First, I didn't think any huge jobs were in serious threat of opening, and I may have been wrong. Florida coach has to be feeling the heat. Texas and USC are also jobs that could open with the way things started this season.

 

Second, I have to come off Tuberville a bit after today. I know the injury affected the team down the stretch, but UC go outclassed today by a Illinois team that was dreadful last year. Maybe they are much better this year. If so, there coach has done a great job.

Speaking to my friends in school who are Texas alum, they think they can get Nick Saban. Personally, I don't think that's very realistic. I would see John Gruden or someone whose got some NFL experience and has been out of the game doing commentary for a year or so being more realistic.

 

After last night, I think Texas will be getting a new coach next year though.

 

If Strong goes anywhere, I think Arkansas (he was born and raised there), South Carolina (he got his big start as an assistant there), Florida, Florida State, and possibly Miami are the ones he'd leave Louisville for.
