Saint Xavier Tigers

Saint Xavier Tigers Preview

Saint Xavier is sporting a new head coach with no previous varsity coaching experience. Will Wolford is a 1982 alumnus of Saint X. He played in the NFL for 13 years, went to three super-bowls and was a three time pro bowl participant. Wolford is replacing a “living legend”, so the expectations are sky high. Most supporters have faith that with his knowledge of the game and revamped coaching staff he can get the job done.

Saint X has a slightly revamped schedule this season, with only one tune-up game. That game being Fairdale. Lex-cath is the second game on the schedule and they have a big time prospect under center. Bowling green is the third game on the schedule and they return a plethora of talent and has beaten X the past 2 seasons. The regular district games with Male, Manual, and Trinity. Trinity though they lost some great players, will always be Trinity. But with that being said, the feeling in the air is this is X’s year to return to prominence over T. The schedule is rounded out with two Cincinnati powers, X and Moeller. Moeller escaped X last season with a 7 point victory so this season’s game should make for a good one. Usually a team circles one date on the calendar as “thee game” but I don’t see that on this schedule with so many good teams. Although the schedule is tough, some X faithful are calling an undefeated season.

X returns 4 starters on both offense and defense. On offense there is chatter that all three backs are going to be on the field at the same time. Percell and Davis in the backfield with Walker working out of the slot. All the camps Walker has attended, he worked out as a receiver so this is good news. Walker received top wr honors at the Cincinnati Rivals camp. Roshkowski is another good receiver for X. He has seen time since his sophomore season as has walker(Starter) and looks poised to be the second piece of the dynamic duo at receiver. The tigers also have a new QB at the helm. He may be more college ready then his predecessor. He definitely looks the part at 6‘3 225 lbs. He has performed well this off-season in spring practices and the various camps he’s participated in. But time will tell, as the season is just around the corner. He shouldn’t have any problem finding time to throw the ball with the line he has protecting him. This year’s line fits the mold of a St X line. On average the lineman are 6‘6 265 lbs, with “Big Zane” being the largest at 6‘7 306 lbs. The offense should be in good hands with the newly assembled coaching staff and their collective knowledge and experience. The defense on the other hand didn’t see a complete revamp, keeping the dc and a few position coaches. As a unit they did take a blow, but not one they can’t recover from. They lost their leading tackler in Clyburn who is now at Colorado St., they lost their most aggressive corner, Clemons and they lost a speedster at safety. The linebackers should recoup and become a strong point on the defense along with the d-line.The secondary returns Dekota Jones, who has been starting since his sophomore year. There will be new faces in the secondary this season.

All in all it it should be a solid season. But as aforementioned time will tell. There are major question marks regarding the new coaching staff, but there are still lofty expectations in place for this season. Many fans believe this squad could go undefeated if it meshes correctly. Personally I won’t place praise or criticism on how many wins or losses come in the regular season. I’m placing the highest value on who is still standing on Dec. 2nd.

Players to Watch:

Charles Walker, ATH, 5‘11” 188 lbs. senior. Walker has led the tigers in rushing since his sophomore season. He’s hit the camp scene hard this off-season and brought home top wr honors at the Cincinnati Rivals camp. Reported a 4.4 at the UK camp.

Austin Davis, Rb, 5‘10”, 225 lbs. senior. Davis is coming off a foot injury that has sidelined him for a majority of the off-season. Many college coaches still expect him to do big things this season. He’s currently rated a 3 star and the number 32 back by 24/7 sports.

Treyveon Percell, Rb, 5‘10”, 192 lbs. senior. He rushed for over 700 yards and 13 tds last season as a backup. Currently rated a 2star by rivals and holds an offer from Indiana State.

B.J. Nagle, QB, 6‘3”, 225 lbs. senior. Son of former UofL star, Browning Nagle. Transfer from Briarcrest Christian out of Memphis, Tn. He’s camped all over the country and has looked impressive this spring.

Lenny Broyles, Dt, 6‘0”, 285 lbs. senior. Big time player for X. Currently rated a 2star by rivals and holds offers from Semo and Austin Peay.

Dekota Jones, Db, 5‘9.5”, 188 lbs. senior. Prime time player for X. Been starting since his sophomore season. Had a pick 6 his sophomore year in a 7-3 victory over Cincy X. Brought home Db MVP honors from the NUC 5star camp. Receiving interest from Purdue and Cincinnati.

Andrew McCormick, Lb, 6‘1”, 215 lbs. senior. Baseball player by trade but great football player as well. Great in coverage, looks good in space. Expected to fill void left by Clyburn.

Will Roshkowski, Wr, 5‘11”, 160 lbs. senior. Has been playing varsity since his sophomore year. Great player to say the least. Good speed, great hands, and excellent route runner. Great punt returner as well.

Skyler Robison, Dt, 5‘11”, 255 lbs. senior. Rotated on the d-line last season and recorded 39 solo tackles. He currently holds an offer from Lindsey Wilson.

John Kurtz, OT, 6‘5”, 260 lbs. senior. currently rated a 2star by rivals and holds offers from WKU and Ball State. Also receiving interest from Illinois.

How many wins does everyone see?

How many wins does everyone see?

Avid. I think the toughest games might be (in order) BG,Moeller, Cincy X and then Trinity, followed closely by Central But, I think the Tigers can run the table

I have concerns about the Defense, with a new scheme and several new faces. Please tell me about that side of the ball...I have heard they will be quick and athletic.

Offensively, I do not see how teams will stop us from scoring lots of points. Too may weapons and now a play book !!

Excuse my grammar in my post including the question. Regarding the defense, they still have the same defensive coordinator and a couple position coaches so it won't be totally new. They also return starters and players who saw significant minutes so they should be alright. Only thing I can't really speak on is the secondary for I only recognize one corner, being dekota jones.

Offense will be A OK. :ylsuper:

I see 10 winnable games though.

I don't want to overlook their first 2 games, but when the Purples travel up to take on the Tigers will be a true test of where this team really is. I to will be interested to see the defense more than the offense which may sound a bit odd. But in my opinion it has been the defense that has been down the last few years. It will be interesting to see if they can build on their performance against T when they held them to 15 points.

Provided that they can break the ribs of BGs best player then they should be fine. Of course I suspect they will be more than fine without that. All joking aside, I honestly wouldn't put it all on the D over the last few years, they have been awesome against anyone not named Trinity.

I guess I have been use to a certain standard over the years in the X defense and that last 3 years they have not been X defense of old.

It will be interesting to see the X offense give people fits in multiple ways.

PepRock, you understand this, at the end of the day X has to be awesome against T's offense in order to play in December.
