Pete Rose HOF

Let's call it as it is . Baseball writers and some of their fans are the biggest sport snobs in the world . The fact that the man with the most hits in the history of the game isn't in the HOF makes the whole system a joke .

Rose betting on baseball and denying for years and then when he comes clean releases a book is the joke.

Not a betting guy, so I'll ask this...does baseball betting usually involve a point spread the way football does? The reason why I ask, is that the Reds could be considered 4 run favorites over the opposition, and Pete may not have bet on them for that game...NOT because he doesn't think they will win, (nor will he do anything to try and make them lose)...but, simply that he doesn't feel they can cover the spread. And yes, that action (or actually non-action) by him, may have some influence on the betting community...but, it would zero impact on how the game is played/managed on the field.

Baseball bets are based on who wins the game. No "spreads" involved.

A money line is set based on the specifics of the game - most notably the starting pitchers. A typical dime line for a game would be: Favorite bet $140 to win $100 - Underdog bet $100 to win $120.

I remember reading that Pete did bet on the Reds to win every game. A logical reason for him to skip a night of betting would be that he didn't like the line. Had to lay too much money for the return. He may have even bet a larger amount on nights if he thought the line was favorable.

Probably not way ahead, and probably only a couple of hundred ahead at the end of the season, at most. You're not wagering $100 to win $100. You have to remember the vig which is anywhere from $20-$40 in baseball, meaning you're betting $120 or $140 to win $100. At a $20 vig, a 90 win season only nets you about $360 (which is better than losing). Pete never won 90 games as a manager though.

You also have to remember that the Reds would not have been favored in every game they played. There would be instances when a loss would have only cost a $100 better a $100.

Also, no way of knowing if he bet the same amount each night. That would be a greater indicator of his perception of his teams chances on any given night. He may have loaded up on some games if he liked the pitching match-up or thought it was a favorable line, or backed off a bit if the converse were true.

Betting on baseball and releasing a book helped him get zero hits. If Pete Rose isn't in the baseball HOF, then the HOF is a joke.

^ I agree.

What Rose did on the field was amazing and should be in the HOF based on his on-field production. Last time I checked the HOF is filled with players who gambled, did drugs, among other things we don't know about. The HOF shouldn't be based on a person's character or what they did off the field.

Shoeless Joe is still banned not sure why Rose would be reinstated

Good point. I'd like to see both in.

I think the bolded would be true once you get outside of the Cincy area.

Why the city has idolized the baffoon is beyond me. They've made him out to be some sort of innocent victim to a vicious vendetta by MLB.

I really haven't seen many people make him out to be an innocent victim, certainly not "the city". Idolized? Certainly.

You're kidding right? Almost everyone in Cincy acts like what he did was no big deal, and he's been unfairly punished.

Pete's bat should be in the HOF. The turf where his record hit landed should be there.

His face on a plaque should not.

FWIW, I really couldn't care less. He made his bed, he has no one to blame but the man in the mirror. I mainly started the thread because I never really thought that he wouldn't get in if allowed on the ballot. Kirchens remarks sounded like it wouldn't matter, that he wouldn't get voted in of eligible.

Not kidding at all, you have no idea what you're talking about. Sure there are people like that, most of them probably from the west part of Cincy, but almost everyone? Not even close.

What many are not aware of is the fact that when Pete Rose accepted a ban from baseball, that did not preclude him from being elected to The Hall of Fame. Most felt that Pete would be elected eventually, but would be made to wait.

When Bart Giamatti died his successor, and best friend, Fay Vincent, was hurt and blamed Rose for the loss of a man he loved. Fay Vincent took it upon himself to use every force available to him to influence The Hall and the Baseball writers association to change their rules and ban those who were banned from baseball to admittance into the hall. Vincent, by all accounts used every means possible including various threats and other strong arm tactics. He ultimately got his wish, and that, Bart Giamatti's death and Fay Vincent's vendetta, is the reason that Rose is not in the HOF.

I personally spoke with Bud Selig about four or five years ago and he told me that Rose bet on the Reds to win on a daily basis. When I asked him if Rosé might someday be reinstated his reply was that, (paraphrasing because i can't remember exact wording but this is amost exact quote) Bart Giamatti was a great man. Many believe that this whole Rose thing brought on Bart's untimely death. I am in that camp.

Keep in mind that when Vincent stepped down as commissioner he strongly influenced the selection of Selig. As long as Selig is commish Rosé has no chance at reinstatement. When Selig steps down the new commish will be asked what his view is on Rose and if he does not openly support a continued ban Vincent will set out to eliminate that candidate.

Now on to the Hall of Fame. It is designed to honor the games greatest players. There can be no argument that Pete Rose is not among them. What it has not done was ever exclude anyone for poor character. Ty Cobb was notorious for his attempts to injure other players on the field. The acts that he committed on the field on a regular basis would not only get him suspended today, but would land him in jail. Others were drunkards wife abusers and on and on. The HOA recognizes baseball achievement. Nothing more. If you could get points toward the HOF for being a good guy, hell I might get in. ( I did hit about ten home runs in one little league season)

Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame and deserves to be there.

Fay Vincent was on Mike & Mike I believe Wednesday morning. When the topic of Pete Rose was brought up. Fay Vincent said, and I'm paraphrasing. Pete agreed to the ban, with the understanding that if he showed that he had reconfigured his life he would be eligible for reinstatement. Vincent, then when on to say that,"Poor old Pete has changed his life but its to late." Then they asked him what was worst, betting on baseball or PED's. Vincent responded that PED's were. The reason is because people were cheating and still getting paid. Also this was setting a terrible example for our youth.

Did anybody else hear that interview? It was around 8:30 am.

I heard him on Mike and Mike, and I was a bit surprised. Sounded like he thought Rose had burned too many bridges for either the writers or the veterans to vote him in.
