July 31, 201313 yr Their accomplishments were aided... Pitchers were doing it just as much as the hitters, and baseball didn't care. If it weren't for those guys baseball would be dead. Rose broke the single most important rule of professional sports. Much greater an offense.

July 31, 201313 yr Author I would have to disagree, cheating to win is worse than betting to win. Any outside influence that affects the result of a game should be considered as equal offense. Rose could have and probably did make decisions as the manager based on his bets.
July 31, 201313 yr I would have to disagree, cheating to win is worse than betting to win. So George Brett shouldn't be in the HOF? Betting on baseball is the rule that is plastered around every clubhouse in baseball. It's the one sacred rule of the sport. Million times worse IMO.
July 31, 201313 yr Any outside influence that affects the result of a game should be considered as equal offense. Rose could have and probably did make decisions as the manager based on his bets.By all accounts he never bet against the Reds to win, so he supposedly someway manipulated to win games that he was already trying to win anyway. He also was found to have bet on them daily, so it wasn't like he was blowing the bull pen one day to "Get a win" and not worrying about the next day, because he was betting on them to win the next day. Besides it being a "Baseball Rule" what is wrong with betting on your team to win? Jockeys and trainers are allowed to bet on their horses, do you think they somehow can effect a race more just because they bet on their horse. But for betting I agree he should have been banned...but he bet after his playing days were over. Pete the Player should be in the Hall and be in before any of the PED/HGH guys for what he did on the field.
July 31, 201313 yr He'll never get in while he is alive IMO. Maybe after he passes away he would be reinstated and the veterans committee could vote him in. No way the Elitist Snobs of the BBWAA ever vote him in. IMO Pete "The Player" deserve to be in. These have always been my sentiments. I agree with you completely. I think baseball will reinstate him after his death, and I would think he would then be voted in. The men who run baseball would not give him the luxury of being added to the HOF and its a true shame to have one of the best hitters ever be excluded. I don't care about how you feel about him as an individual.
July 31, 201313 yr Also, don't see how they can put him in, and not guys like Bonds, Clemens, Palmerio, ARod, etc. FWIW, I think all those guys on baseball accomplishments and merit deserve to be in. They cheated to obtain those accomplishments. Rose did not. His bets did not make him a better hitter. Their PEDs did help them reach theirs.

How do we know he didn't get in too deep to someone and was asked to throw games to cover debts? The fact is when you have the power to affect the out come of a game you can't gamble on it. If I had to rate the PED versus gambling then it has to be gambling as the worse offense.
July 31, 201313 yr Author They cheated to obtain those accomplishments. Rose did not. His bets did not make him a better hitter. Their PEDs did help them reach theirs. Which one is more detrimental to the integrity of the game? A juiced hitter versus a juiced pitcher or a guy throwing games?

I think the bolded would be true once you get outside of the Cincy area. Why the city has idolized the baffoon is beyond me. They've made him out to be some sort of innocent victim to a vicious vendetta by MLB.
July 31, 201313 yr Author They cheated to obtain those accomplishments. Rose did not. His bets did not make him a better hitter. Their PEDs did help them reach theirs. I would also add that every pitcher that doctored a ball, every batter that used a corked bat, every player they popped hands full of greenies before a game are in the same category as PED users. Yet no one has an issue with the other cheaters being in the HOF.

Had he just admitted it from the start and worked with baseball to right the wrong then I think he is at least reinstated by now.
