I'm going to assume that it's because the grocery aspect of Wal-Mart is secondary. They are a low-cost provider of goods. Kroger is a low-cost provider of food. There is a big difference.

One would think that non-union Wal-Mart would have lower grocery prices than union Kroger, but that isn't the case. Maybe someone could explain why.

 

My guess is because they don't have to be. Wal-Mart will be whatever price they have to. I was paying almost $3 a gallon for milk at Wal-Mart. Dollar General opened a new location that had a grocery store as part of it (not sure what they call them, super dollar general or something) and had milk for $.99. Guess what price Wal-Mart was the next time I was in there.

My experience has been that my grocery bill usually runs lower at Wal-Mart than it does at Kroger. At least here in Owensboro.

We are in agreement, Malachicrunch. I also advocate hard work ... not hardly working. Where we might differ is that I believe in working hard -- and also bargaining hard.

That's what Wal-Mart allegedly did several years ago. Corporate reportedly heard rumors that some meat-cutters were trying to organize, so they just fired every one of 'em.

No they did not fire everyone of them, Walmart was in the process of converting from meat cut in the store to meat being cut at the processor. The union spin was that they were fired but none were, some quit because they did not want to go through the change. In fact none of them even had to take a pay cut. There were meat cutters making well over $20 per hour that no longer had to cut meat, all they had to do was cut boxes open that continued to make $20 per hour cutting boxes open.

Are there individual items cheaper at Kroger, yes. Does Kroger run ads that have items on sale cheaper, yes (but show Walmart cashier the ad and they'll match it). But on market basket comparisons in nearly every major city Walmart is consistently cheaper than Kroger.

 

Look Walmart isn't perfect, I know that better than anyone on BGP I would venture to say, but they are far from what they are portrayed in union flyers. Walmart succeeds because at the end of the day they are the overall cheapest place for Americans to purchase daily necessities.

FWIW I AM NOT Against Unions, my father was a union member for over 30 years and I have seen first hand the good and bad of working under a union.

Kroger always has better meat and dairy at a lower price. I like Wal-Mart for paper towels, pancake syrup, etc. Produce is fairly similar. Kroger always has twice the shoppers of the Wal-Mart two miles away. So that says something right there. Obviously, this differs by location. Where you live, the opposite might be true.

 

Bottom line is I feel more comfortable shopping at a store that offers a living wage to its union workers vs. a store that instructs its people how to get on the government dole.

I was with you until the bolded. Then you started quoting left wing media talking points that even the left wing has disregarded. Average wage in a Walmart store in Kentucky is over $13.00 per hour (not crazy money but much more than most realize), I personally know hourly employees that make in excess of $25 per hour, everyone is eligible for healthcare. As far as the "Govt Dole" that is a direct quote from the UCFW, maybe you didn't get it from them but they started that story.

 

FWIW the average Walmart does from 3 to 5 times as much sales as a neighboring Kroger does. Even if just counting comparable items (no TV's and such) Walmart out sells neighboring Krogers at least 2 to 1.
