We don't have sick days specifically but if you have vacation days you can use them if you get sick.

Universal days is what they're called. Another big-business invention to screw the worker. Like changing over defined benefit pension plans to 401(k) plans.

You make me laugh.

Most solid companies realize that a good sick policy contributes to the bottom line in the way of attracting and retaining good employees. It's sad that there are still companies who don't get it. Still, you shouldn't legislate stupid.

That is the only reason any company has it.

Company that I worked for would not pay sick pay until the second day, if you had vacation or personal day you had to use one of those for the first day off.

And don't forget FMLA, if applicable!
But you don't get paid with just FMLA. FMLA is nice to get time off and ensure you have a job when you go back, but it is not a salary replacement plan.

Let me guess in your little utopia the "worker" shouldn't really have to work big business should just have to pay right?

My company doesn't pay sick pay, why should they?

Are there really people out there that think this is something they're entitled to?

Only when it is offered at time of hire as part of your incentive package. Then yes they should keep their end of the deal.

Hammer, meet nail.

During my working days I enjoyed an extremely liberal sick-leave policy that was totally separate from vacation days. Now tell me why this is a bad.

Not bad at all, that's a good policy for most companies and employees. What's bad is the government dictating a sick leave policy.

I'm not saying it's bad. It's your "another invention by big business to screw the worker" crap that is bad. Business is in business for one reason, to make money. If they are run well and have smart people in leadership then they know they have to take care of their employees to attract and retain good people and stay successful.

As far as the sick days go, it gets abused. When you have a certain amount of days that you can only use when you are sick I would guess pretty much everyone in the company will use them, sick or not. When you have to use your PTO days I would bet there are fewer call ins.

So you're saying that American workers are basically dishonest?

Re: "If they are run well and have smart people in leadership then they know they have to take care of their employees to attract and retain good people and stay successful": That's the Republican/Chamber of Commerce viewpoint. How this plays out in the "real world" is quite different.

Seriously? So a company turning control of employee's retirement savings over to the employee is a screwing the employee? How?

Yep. Absolutely. (Seriously, this is not a tough one to figure out.) Wait for the next market meltdown, like we had in '08, then ask Joe Worker whether his retirement savings plan is better off in a defined contribution 401(k) or a defined benefit plan.

At my hospital we accrue a certain amount of PTO hours per 80 hours worked based on how many years you've been with the hospital. You can use the hours however you see fit, whether it be for vacation, sick time, etc....

Same here...
