Louisville Fans the Best In College Basketball?

Featured Replies

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard from a fan base trying to coin up a phrase. Who the heck came up with that?

I have heard many UL people laugh about L1C4. However, I think it is so bad it has almost become trendy amongst the fan base if that makes sense. L1C4 is the William Hung of athletic marketing slogans. It appears to have stuck so more power to them.

The marketing division of the University of Louisville Athletic Department. To paraphrase Douglas Adams: they'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes.

To call UL fans the "best" in college basketball is laughable. They can barely have any fans outside of Louisville. You would be hard-pressed to find any UL apparel down here in Bowling Green.

I don't see much Louisville apparel in eastern Kentucky either. And not very much in central Kentucky.

Doesn't UL make a large chunk of money from the Yum Center alcohol sales, which isn't allowed at Rupp and most other college venues? Wouldn't that skew the statistics that the conclusions were based on?

Reading an article about a study with a suspect methodology: terrible.

Using that article to troll UK fans: great.

I think you're failing to grasp the definition of the word "best". It's not a synonym for "most numerous".

Name an NBA organization that would share an arena with a college team? And when we say share, I'm talking 30+ dates between October and March...

UofL played 18 games at the Yum center this past season so not quite 30+. However I agree with you that an NBA isn't coming here and it has less to do with UofL's contract at the YUM center and more to do with the lack of population in KY combined with disposable income already going to college sports, mainly UK. Louisville isn't big enough to support an NBA team on it's own. They would have to draw from the state / Southern IN and they just isn't going to happen.

UK fans travel much much better than UL fans, and any other college's fan as well. If UK and UL played on the moon, UK fans would undoubtedly make the trip and outnumber the UL fans 4:1.

Which I think would be an interesting reflection of how many UK and UofL fans there actually are. In fact, if it's only 4:1, then you guys aren't holding up your end of this deal. If what Cat fans say is to be believed, UK fans across the Commonwealth and the nation easily outnumber Louisville fans more than 4:1. So if that's the best you guys can do, I'm a little embarrassed for you.

UL fans are the best in college basketball. Period. The study says so. Deal with it and move on with your wallets and purses out and buy more UK gear if you have a problem with it.

How does Memphis compare to Louisville you think? Many do not realize but the Tigers are well supported in the Memphis area with the same type of dynamic of being the city's school despite being in the UT Volunteer state. Huge following. Many had the same concerns when the Grizzlies relocated to town but they seem to have managed just fine. Population wise they are very similar. The most important that is to have a good product.

The big difference is the UK factor here. Not only would an NBA team be competing with UofL, it also would be competing for support with UK. The Grizzlies don't have to worry about that too much when it comes to UT.

For an NBA team to work in Kentucky, you have to operate from the assumption that there are 20,000 people who are able to buy tickets consistently, who are not already supporting UofL or UK. Those 20,000 people have to be NBA fans only, in a college hoops-mad state. I just ain't seeing it.

I partially agree, I partially disagree.

For the most part, NBA ticket sales are driven the same way they are at UofL games: corporate buyers. What REALLY matters is whether there are enough big companies in Louisville to buy up suite and lower bowl tickets. I'm not convinced there are enough corporate buyers to make it worthwhile for an NBA ownership group to invest here. NBA owners are looking for places where corporate dollars flow like wine and civic funds are readily available. The mayor's office and Metro Council have demonstrated that the latter is there for the taking. Just look at how Todd Blue, the Cordish Companies and the University of Louisville have done when squaring off with local government lately...

I'm not convinced of the former.

Like Bengal fans, it says to me they are the dumbest. Spend money even if they are losing? Makes no sense.
