May 26, 201313 yr We Were Soldiers In Harm's Way Glory Gettysburg The Bridge Over the River Kwai The Big Red One The Dirty Dozen Band Of Brothers Tora! Tora! Tora! Midway
May 26, 201313 yr SPR was a great visual movie but I thought was overrated from a story, acting, dialogue perspective. Sure, Hanks and an all-star cast plus Spielberg makes most want to like it just because who made it. i just don't think it was as good as others mentioned. Bridge on The River Kwai ftw.
May 26, 201313 yr Midway Patton Saving Private Ryan Full Metal Jacket Apocalypse Now Platoon Dr. Strangelove Fail-safe We Were Soldiers Red Dawn (original)
May 27, 201313 yr They're miniseries but Band of Brothers and The Pacific are excellent as well. If Band of Brothers counts than it easily blows anything else out of the water for me. I watch them at least once a year. Love them and have read the memoirs of several soldiers. The Pacific is pretty good also.
May 27, 201313 yr AMC is running a marathon today. Dirty dozen on now. The longest day Heartbreak ridge The green berets Where eagles dare. TMC is running the following oldies The Devils brigade Kelly's Heroes The best years of our lives Air force Command decision.
May 28, 201313 yr Honorable mentions (I don't think these have been mentioned yet, but are worth checking out) The Thin Red Line The Great Escape Das Boot Battle of the Bulge Sink the Bismarck To Hell and Back Memphis Belle Courage Under Fire Hell is for Heroes Gods and Generals Andersonville
May 28, 201313 yr May not be exactly this genre but, The Hunt for Red October is pretty good too. Bluegrasscard had Fail-Safe on his list, and the Cold War was considered a war of sorts, so why not? BTW, it's one of my favorite movies of all time. The best cast of all of the Tom Clancy book movies, too.
May 28, 201313 yr I was going to mention The Green Berets as I watched it on AMC. Definitely a pro-Viet Nam war propaganda piece but entertaining none the less. John Wayne seemed exceptionally "stiff" in it for some reason.
May 28, 201313 yr Apocalypse Now has to be #1. Love Platoon, Saving Private Ryan, and Full Metal Jacket as well.
May 28, 201313 yr I was just watching The Green Berets again and spoiler alert if you haven't seen it. Although quite tame by today's standards I remember how much the scene of Peterson's death freaked me out when I first saw it on TV in the very early 70's and even then they only showed the aftermath not the actual "death". The version on AMC shows him actually "dying".
May 29, 201313 yr Apocalypse Now has to be #1. Love Platoon, Saving Private Ryan, and Full Metal Jacket as well. Saw last night that there was an Apocalypse Now Redux? What was the difference?
May 29, 201313 yr If Band of Brothers counts than it easily blows anything else out of the water for me. I watch them at least once a year. Love them and have read the memoirs of several soldiers. The Pacific is pretty good also. I put Generation Kill above The Pacific. I'd need to re-watch them both to rank it against BoB.
May 29, 201313 yr Saw last night that there was an Apocalypse Now Redux? What was the difference? The addition of several scenes. None of them are particularly good or important to the story. If you can watch the movie and avoid the Redux version, you're better off.
