Do Any Football Teams Cut Players?

Featured Replies

From another thread where we got on the subject of cutting.

I don't know of any teams that cut. Do you?

My son's CCH team played Cincy St X back in 2004 and they had over 100 players so they didn't cap the roster at 100 for jersey number purposes.

There's no rule that says two players on a team cannot have the same number.

I played on the team that you had to make running times set forth or you didn't make the team. As long as you could make the running, you were on the team. Also same team had a player walk off in the middle of practice pre-season and the coach allowed the players to vote whether he was allowed to return to the team.

Interesting topic. Not being from here I was very surprised that HS's did not have cuts in football but then again most of the schools need or can use the "bodies" and there doesn't appear to be a glaring issue even when teams reach the century mark. It works so I guess there really isn't a need to have them. That is correct that there is no rule about the double number situations, you see it repeatedly in college. They just can't be on the field at the same time.

I like the idea of conditioning standards for making a football team. Although I don't know exactly what they should be, conditioning criteria not only would improve team performance, but reduce injury risk.

Oh the days of Tom Duffy, how they are missed in the Fort. The Birds will have in excess of 100 players this year if everyone sticks with the program which will mean that there are double numbers. It is my understanding that you can have double numbers as long as both are not on the field at the same time. Only know this because it was an issue last year for the Birds. Believe it or not that was not Jac Collinsworth that was kicking off last year at the away games.

I believe that X and T cut - at the JV level. Everyone 'makes' the freshman team. That has been over 100 usually. But there are simply not enough slots at those programs for everyone wanting to play at JV and V level.

Having been at games where every kid is playing like crazy down to the very last play. You see the effort in every play when you are trying to ensure you make the next level. Unfortunately this leaves a bad feeling with the opposing team in a blow-out. But when you are fighting for 'a slot' next year every player plays every play like its the state finals. I have had to explain that more than once to new parents who couldn't understand why this was happening.

Maybe someone from those schools can verify this.

I don't know of any public schools that cut. Have had players kicked off of the team for disciplinary reasons but none cut.

I think for schools that don’t cut, attrition usually takes care of that. Guys who think they want to play and find out it’s a lot of sacrifice and don’t want to put in the hard work, cut themselves. Guys who think they’re Mr. Football and find out there’s always someone better, don’t want to put in the work to be a teammate, cut themselves. Guys who can’t take “constructive criticism” from head or position coaches, cut themselves. Guys who don’t want to put in the work in the classroom, cut themselves, etc.

What's the median roster size in NKY? 45? 50?

Iam confused....

Highlands will have close or over 100 this yr and every kid thinks they are Mr. Football but yet only 22 will start. Probably another 15 or 20 will work their way onto to special teams and maybe another 10 to 15 will rotate based on matchups.

That leaves something in the neighborhood of 45 to 50 kids that will not see the field on Friday nites yet they all show up each and every day and complaining of playing time pretty much doesnt exist.

My point? Quitting is easy, perseverance is the hard part. That is dedication for a High School kid imo...:thumb:

I would say on average 30 for NKY Class A including Frosh for all except Beechwood. Class AA 30-40 although some dress Frosh and some do not. 4A-6A varies from 40-80 probably with no Frosh.

No one cuts by sometimes it is "suggested" to a player who has no experience and cannot defend himself that there might be a better way to serve the team and be a part of it other than on the playing field.

Not entirely sure of your point to my post. I was just putting my two cents in as to why public schools may not cut in football because the "cutting" kind of takes care of itself by the examples I noted. Now in the case of elite powerhouse programs I surely understand what you are noting. Your sentence, "Quitting is easy, perseverance is hard part", kind of makes my point that those who quit, cut themselves.

Trinity does not cut at any level. There is attrition as kids decide not to play any longer, usually at the JV level. But they aren't cut. Some kids see the field only in cases of a running clock. Some kids never see the field.

You never know what freshman or sophomore could be a 6'5" WR or lineman.

I know of a few places where new staffs have done everything they can within legal limits to run off a kid they deem undesirable. Sometimes the kid sticks it out and buys into the program and may even become a starter. Most retire from football. No cuts. Dress limits may exist.
