Should A Felony Keep You From High School Sports

Featured Replies

Do schools have rules about athletes who commit a crime especially if its a felony?

If a boy or girl commits a felony but does not get jail time should a school say they can't play any sports?

If you were a coach would you allow a kid who commits a serious crime to be on the team?

Never thought about it really. Not that felonies don't happen by high schoolers, just that I never thought about them being involved in athletics.

YES! Accountability is important.

Forever?

How do you commit a felony and not get jail time? Is that possible?

As a juvenile, yes.

So lets cut to the chase. This a hypothetical or is this a real issue somewhere?

Heck, Mason County had a guy miss the 2004 state basketball tournament because he was out after a city of Maysville curfew. He was just out.

Depends on the school/coach, I guess.

My guess is certain schools will have team rules. Other schools will not.

Yes, the kid should not play. A felony is a serious offense and with it should come some serious consequences. Kids need to be held accountable and understand that their actions have consequences including the loss of participating in high school athletics. I know there may be some that say athletics may keep him out of additional trouble and I say "hogwash". It's too late after the felony has been committed. I know this may sound "old school" but that's what I believe. Think before you act and if you don't, be prepared to accept the consequences. Athletics is a privilege not a right!

As a juvenile, yes.

Wouldn't they go to Juvenile Jail or something like that?

Very seldom, especially if it is their first offense. It is ridiculous how much trouble a kid has to get into before any serious action is taken by the courts... At least where I live that is the way it is.

Not always, no. Not even for a felony.
