Grant County opening has been filled

The admin tried to start the process of firing Coach Hicks this year but he called them out because they screwed up their paperwork and they backed down. He finally got tired of them last year and started calling them out on some of the things they are currently being investigated for by the OEA. They didn't like that, obviously, so I'm sure they're hoping this new coach is a yes man. If not, he'll be replaced in a year or two.

If the administration was indeed trying to fire Coach Hicks, then there had to be a reason. All Coach Hicks wanted to do was coach basketball, hence why he was never put in a real class because all he can teach is health and physical education and GCHS already has a fine gym teacher in Utter. If Coach Hicks would have turned things in on time and followed simple guidelines given by administration then they would have had a better opinion of him. Coach never intended Grant county to be a permanent stop considering he never bought a house and rented the same one for three years. You all are relying on what Coach Hicks has told people, not fact. I'm tired of people bashing the yes mam philosophy. Every other occupation in the world is this way, why should a basketball coach be treated special? How hard is it to realize the obvious? Coach Hicks left because SV is a better job for him. He is from that part of Kentucky so let him go back to his people.

I don't know what went on between Coach Hicks and the administration and I really don't care. Coach Hicks seems to have a track record of only staying at a school for two to three years and I don't know why this is the case. Why can't he stay at a school more than two or three years? People shouldn't be surprised that he is leaving Grant, whether it be his choice or influenced by the administration. He just don't stay long at any place.

just a question. if coach Hicks was using Grant County as a stepping stone, then why not wait till next year when you have the number one or two team in the region. Grant County could have had a good chance to go to state and he could have used that to go to even better school.

I think BravesAttack is on to something. Coach Hicks is originally from the Harlan area, eastern Kentucky. Eastern Kentucky does things differently than other areas of the state. Winning at sports, and specifically basketball, is what the coach is hired to do. They don't hire you to be the greatest teacher, they hire you to win. As long as you are winning, they would never address a deficiency in the classroom. Coach Hicks was winning at Grant. I don't think he could understand why they would be complaining about paperwork issues and attending teachers meetings. I don't think this makes either Coach Hicks or the Grant County administration wrong, it just makes them a bad fit. Hopefully, both parties have better fits now and the GC kids will prosper with a new coach who is hopefully committed to be there for awhile.

Which is exactly why it wasn't a good hire from the beginning. They had a Grant County resident on the coaching staff that deserved it that was also a current teacher in the building. No brainer hire and they passed him over.

Hating Mr. Burgess is like hating the Dalai Lama.

I for sure, have never said anything about hating Mr. Burgess in any form. I've known him for over 30 years and there isn't a man who's put in more time and hard work into any organization in Grant Co. than him.

You may convince others that the administration consists of all these fine upstanding individuals but, some of us know the truth and its not because Coach Hicks filled us in. They care about 2 things and that is how much money they can spend and how many kids they can push out the door with a diploma. They will do whatever it takes no matter how unethical it is! Coach Hicks problems started when the current superintendent was hired along with the little gutless principal they have as she placed all her cronies around her so she didn't have to address things. Problems aren't solved they're swept under the rug and hidden.

Yeah all the administration cares about is getting kids out the door with a diploma? Really? Do you even live in grant county? They have done so much to the school in recent years to make it better. They have out smart boards in every classroom allowing students to learn in ways never thought before. Then they only built a multi million dollar tech center to give students who do not wish to go to college usefully skills that will help them find a job or start a career without flipping burgers. I don't who you are but you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.

A lot of your teachers and admin. don't even live in the county. Whats that have to do with anything? And like I said earlier, 2 things spending money and kids out the door! Grant County has the worst athletic facilities in NKY or in the entire region. Boosters are made to buy uniforms, pay for travel and yet they want to know where all the booster money is coming from. They just want to get their hands on that too! The kids who work hard in school are the ones who are penalized, because the kids that don't work hard get their grades changed so they can pass. Is that helping that child?

You can have all the modern technology in the world but if not used correctly,it is virtually useless. So all the talk about smart boards means nothing.

Get people in there who care about kids and want to see them be successful. Don't have leadership classes taught by those who can't lead and turn their class loose outside unsupervised to pick up trash.

Get board members and a superintendent in place who are willing to talk to the parents and taxpayers without being given the runaround when they call the central office. If you don't believe me call the central office and ask to talk to the superintendent. You will go through 1 and sometimes 2 gatekeepers to screen who is calling and why. If he feels it's relevant he may call you back. Also do away with the special cessions at board meetings to vote on giving away 34k of taxpayer dollars, especially when there are parents and teachers at the meeting who may have actually liked to know what was going on.

Don't tell me these things aren't going on I know firsthand they are!

Sorry to rant but Grant County School System is the laughing stock of the state it needs change now!

Rule 9

We need to focus on Grant County's new hire. A new thread has been created if you want to discuss it there. And it would be helpful to re-read BGP's Rules/Terms of Service which can be easily found at the "Quick Links" drop down box at the top of each page.
