It is bad enough for a student to strike a teacher but 71 years old and you hit them. Wow!

Students have no fear of their teachers anymore. They know the teacher can't do a thing.

Fear or no fear, just a total lack of respect.

If there's an underlying problem, you go to your parents/guardian and/or school administration.

Here is the problem. When I was a youngster, I didn't fear the teacher, either. I feared what my old man would do to me if I disrespected the teacher and he found out about it.

My kids feared their old man's reaction as well.

And in many situations, the student will be back in class in a couple of weeks. Sooner if they have any type of IEP or 504. As with many parts of society today, holding people accountable for their actions isn't politically correct anymore.

This kind of thing makes me sick. I know teachers who have been injured by kids and have lingering effects... But the kid is back in their class like nothing ever happened because they are entitled to a free education. It's crap... We need more alternative/military schools.

Spot on Rat. 100% truth.

I feared both.

4th grade nun straightened me out. She was mean as a snake and I think she was about 90 years old at the time. She would wack them knuckles with that wooden ruler, but I wouldn't dare go home and tell dad because then I'd get the strap which was worse. Now a days the student threatens the teacher with telling the parents. Not sure when all of this flip flopped but its sad. Grandpa always said it should be mandatory that after high school you serve 2 years in the military. I'm starting to see what he was talking about. Teachers are glorified babysitters anymore with all power and authority stripped from them. Bring back paddling. Ooh rah

Do not blame parents or student.

Kid is misunderstood and I am sure the teacher is to blame.

Teacher needs to be more sympathetic to nap time, cheating, tardiness, bathroom breaks, dress code, cell phone use, kissing. The teacher must show more respect for the kid. All kids can learn at a high level and no child left behind.

Moronic. Should be made to undergo some sort of mental evaluation.

On a side note, why in the world should a student ever fear a teacher?

When I went to school you could still be paddled by the teachers/ administration. Some of the teachers would flat light your backside up. Trust me, it was definitely intimidating, and something students would fear.

That's fine and all, but the world has changed in the last 50 years. I'd never consider sending a child to a school where the teachers tried to intimidate them. That's an awful learning environment IMO.
