If your only contact with UK basketball was radio broadcasts with Ledford, you'd think that the angels of Kentucky could do no wrong. Such is life with a team's play-by-play guy.

 

But there's no denying that the guy is a legend in the UK fan community. I can't imagine neutral/opposing fans get much out of listening to Paul Rodgers do UofL games, but I love that guy.

I remember listening to Cawood do non-UK tourney games and he was awesome. Cawood wasn't as much of a homer as some suggest, I remember him criticizing the team and even defending officials on calls that went against UK.

 

Grew up listening to Marty and Joe. My mom could get me to take a bath in the summer by turning on the Reds game on a radio in the bathroom. If it was a good game I would come out like a prune, but Marty and Joe always made me feel like I was right there.

 

Nationally Vin Scully is about as good as it got.

Loved Tom Hammond (especially with Joe Dean Sr.) on SEC Basketball.

Pat Summerall was great at the Masters.

Jim McKay could call any sport and do an excellent job doing it.

Something about Kieth Jackson in the 70's and 80's doing college football that just seems like a perfect match.

I cannot stand Marty, I think he is the most negative announcer for his team!!!!

I enjoy that Marty will rip a Reds player, star or not. He will call out BP or Griff as well as rookies.

Or when Bruce is up to the plate with runners in scoring position, in the bottom of the 9th he says stuff like....well we know what to expect here a strike out or double play ball. When he could say that Bruce is due to come up with a big hit.

 

Then if Bruce does not get the run in he says, well what did you expect. If does drive in the run he is like ho hum whatever that is what he is supposed to do.

Gonna have to disagree with you about Cawood. I always felt like he did a pretty good job of telling it like it really was, and was the only person able to get away with ripping into the 'Cats when it was deserved.

Agreed, I think there is even a story about him ripping into the Cats and then getting called in to see Rupp. Cawood was expecting Rupp to light him up but Rupp agreed that they had played like crap and told Cawood not to worry about it.

I can't speak for other people, but that's not necessarily true for me. I grew up in a time before cable. We got 2 TV stations, both out of Knoxville, WBIR and WATE. I listened to as many, if not more, games on the radio with John Ward doing the call of UT games on WNOX as I did Cawood Ledford on WCTT. I was raised listening to Al Michaels and Joe then Marty and Joe, too. I've also lived in several states including Wisconsin, where I was exposed to probably the best baseball play-by-play man on the planet, IMHO, Bob Uecker, and have lived down here for more than half my life.

 

When I moved to Florida, the only college sports on the radio was Jim Louk, doing basketball and baseball, at USF, David Steele at Florida, and Gene Deckerhoff at Florida State. The Bucs had Mark Champion and the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees were pumped out of the local radio stations. Not a Yankee fan, I spent the summers listening to Skip Carey and the Atlanta bunch.

 

Everybody here knows my relationship with USF, but I really don't care for Jim Louk as a play by play announcer. IMG actually replaced him for basketball when they took over the network. He still does football and baseball, though. I've since gotten to know Jim to some extent, but as nice a person as he is, he doesn't quite do it for me behind the mic, game time. He's a good interviewer, though.

 

I liked listening to David Steele, but he went off to the Orlando Magic, when the that team was born. I can't stand Mick Hubert, the current voice of the Gators, "OH MYYYYY!!!"

 

Gene Deckerhoff was the reason I latched on to FSU when I got here. He's every bit the radio voice of Ledford and he calls a heck of a basketball game. I was thrilled when he became the voice of the Bucs in the early nineties. Even as big a USF fan that I am, you can occasionally catch me listening to a FSU game.

 

Several years ago, the high school state football championships were in Tallahassee. During the 4A championship, Deckerhoff poked his head in the booth and the guys calling the game invited him to take the mic. Not only did the quality of the broadcast improve dramatically from a descriptive stand point, but I was absolutely amazed at how much he knew about both teams and high school football in general. He did the second and third quarters, easing out during the 4th. I have never enjoyed a high school game on the radio as much before or since.

 

I still listen to a lot of sports on the radio, well streaming audio on the internet.

 

From my point of view, Andy Freed and Dave Wills of the Rays are every bit as good as Marty and Joe were.

 

David Mishkin, the voice of the Lightning is fantastic, until the Bolts score a goal. At that time I wish somebody would pull the cattle prod out of his rear end, because somebody evidently decided to jam it there right when the red light went on. Painful. Whew. If this guy is ever in real trouble and screams out in pain, everybody is going to think Tampa Bay just scored another goal.
