March 29, 201313 yr Doc Emeril of the NHL gets my vote. The guy makes every game sound like Game 7 of the Stnley Cup Finals and pronounces hockey players names flawlessly. Others I considered, Keith Jackson, Dick Enberg, Verne Lindquist and Vin Scully.
March 29, 201313 yr Waite Hoyt. A lot of people back in the day hoped for rain delays, just to listen to him tell stories about back in his day baseball games!
March 29, 201313 yr Marty also was a heck of a basketball announcer as well, besides baseball. Al Michaels was very good. I really loved listening to Jack Buck on KMOX as a kid when I was growing up.
March 29, 201313 yr Al Michaels, Doc Emrich and Gus Johnson are my three favorites right now. I miss Gary Thorne doing ESPN's NHL broadcasts. He was fantastic doing Stanley Cup Playoff games. I wish I had been able to hear some of the greats when they were younger: Keith Jackson, Dick Enberg, etc.
March 29, 201313 yr Sure was fond of Cawood Ledford. That is my vote, though Cawood's style did not transfer to TV well, always seemed a bit awkward. He was a radio announcer through and through. I could close my eyes and listen to him call a UK game, and I was right there. To me, that is the mark of a great announcer, not a guy who can call a TV broadcast, ie. tell me what I am watching. I was watching that 30 for 30 thing about the 1983 NC State team and heard a little piece of his radio call during a short highlight of the championship game. My mind instantly flooded with memories. He was actually better calling football than basketball on the radio, IMO. I never heard him call a baseball game. While I like Tom Leach, there will never be another Cawood Ledford.

Marty used to do a lot of North Carolina basketball games does he still do some anymore? Brother and I met him in Chicago, for a weekend Reds series. Brother is a huge Carolina fan and we talked basketball for an hour. Really a nice and down to earth guy and funny as heck. I will say this every other word from his mouth was an F-bomb and I have no idea how he has never slipped up and dropped one on the radio. Sean Casey was amazing too. Played ping pong with him for hours.
March 29, 201313 yr Vin Scully. It's not really close. I have never heard Scully do radio. I have heard him do TV and he is the worst TV baseball announcer I ever listened to. He absolutely never shuts up and it becomes totally annoying. I can see how his knowledge, detail and non stop talk would work on the radio but I will never listen/watch a baseball game on TV if Scully is the play by play guy. Marty is very good. I think he sometimes goes over the top on criticism but I will take that without a second thought over the guy who never criticizes. One of my favorite guys now is Jay Bilas. I know he isn't play by play but I love his analysis. My favorite of all time would be Cawood.
