Considering McDonald's GPA and class rank I can assure you his grades have been as such all 9 3/4 years of school. As for his class load at NCC from what I heard people saying at the conference awards banquet he is in Honors and AP classes, so again not a guarantee that a student with such a class load couldn't have been held back but again.... Not the case.

 

Depending on the time of year a child is born it is possible to be driving as a soph and still not be held back. If I am not mistaken his mother is also a teacher, not to say in some cases the child of a teacher could have been held back, but it is usually a rare case and in this case i can assure you that you are not correct. Again, could Hatton have been held back for athletics it's possible but for McDonald I would venture to say no.

Qualifier: I have zero interest in how old the kid is. He's legal by state rules and that's all I care about but....

 

If Oct 1 is the earliest birth date for each grade (it used to be - I assume it still is) you could not have your driver's license in your soph year until 4.1.

 

If he already his his DL he was born before the normal cutoff date. Maybe Aug/Sept bday?

More importantly, congrats to the kid for getting it done in the classroom.

Can't be 19 before Aug 1 of senior year. All else is irrelevant.

The stigma some want to put on holding back is baffling to me.

Eligible is eligible.

The whole holdback issue is the norm now...a lot if athletes these days are holdbacks.

 

In nky alone, you have Hatton, Bolden, Schuh, and I believe McDonald at Newcath is older. Could be wrong on the last one.

From what I've heard, most of the St Agnes parents hold their kids back in kindergarten...once at ft wright elementary for free then on to st Agnes.

 

Schuh and both Moeves boys are a year older/hold backs.

Brandon is mentioned more than anyone else because this is an NKY dominated board and he has been around longer than Bolden and Snider. Bolden just popped on the BGP scene this year and it was a heated discussion about him being a 17 year old sophomore and Snider being a holdback got brought up for the first time during this year's Sweet 16. Folks have been hating on Brandon since the 8th grade and it doesn't figure to stop soon. Unfortunately. I hope the hate continues to fuel him.

I think part of the reason Hatton is brought up is because he looked so mature at an early age. Add to the fact he was throwing in 20 a game at an early age.

Bolden still looks like a kid and people are thinking he may still grow. Everyone has been saying Hatton has been done since he was a frosh.

I would find it hard to believe that a parent would know how athletic a child is at the kindergarten age much less sending them at that age from school to school.

 

If a child has a birthdate that is close to the cutoff age, I would assume that a parent would look at the social and mental development before deciding when to send that child to school. Also, if a parent knows that at such a young age as kindergarten that a child is going to be a standout athlete, then more power to those parents. I would have to say that those taking that chance will be wrong more than correct. Just because a child may be big at a certain age doesn't qualify them as the next Jordon.

 

Now as the years go along and parents choose to hold a child back I could see the possible reason for athletics, but even then its a rare case. As for some of the student/athletes mentioned, I am familiar with a couple and I can assure you with their current class schedules of honors classes and GPA's that a student that has been held back usually doesn't have such a academic resume. It seems some are trying to justify or lump others into a select few that may have been held back for certain reasons by including them in this thread.

 

Honestly no matter what the situation is as one post was made, "if the state says they are legal, then they are legal", IMO that is saying it all.

 

Also, to me a year older would mean a calendar year. So if one kid turns 16 before the end of May (end of the normal school year) and another turns 16 later in the year does that mean because a kid can drive before the other one there is that much of a difference? I know that is a bit of a stretch, but really how much does it matter?? Everyone keeps bringing up Hatton's age, but from what I can see he will be playing his senior year and that is all that really matters. If Dixie were a 3 year regional champion I would say it makes a difference, but that is not the case. May it help him with the next level if he is.... yes, but overall it seems by including others in this thread it is just trying to lump anyone that is successful.

To me, whether a kid is a hold back is relevant, and when I ask, particularly on an AAU team, it is not because I am making an accusation or suggesting ineligibility. I want to know how my kid or kids stack up, and if a kid is, in fact, a holdback that is a lot of additional maturity, experience and size. I have heard a lot of people who held kids back make the argument that "you could hold your kid back if you want to!" which is really silly. I am making no accusations, and I realize it is completely within the rules to have your kid be 19 his entire senior year (if his birthday is in August), 18 as a junior, etc., all the way down to being 9 as a second grader. Even though it is within the rules, it is of value to me to know that my team of 10 and 11 year olds is playing against 12 year olds. Those years matter, and it does start to level out in middle school and high school. So, I do consider it "relevant", even if it is within the rules, and when I ask a coach how old his kids are or what grade they're in, I wish they didn't get offended or give me an evasive, or, worse, untruthful, answer. Because that happens a lot.

When I say a kid is a holdback or a year older, I am not saying it was for athletic reasons. When a kid is held back at a younger age, a lot of it has to do with their mental state at the time. No parent holds a kid back before 5th or 6th grade for athletic purposes.

 

As far as the three mentioned being older, yes I trust my source who gave me the info and stand by it.

 

And for the record, I could care less if a kid is a holdback or not. What parents decide to do with their children is their business...not mine.
