How do you rate the state?

Featured Replies

The below post in bold is from over 10 years ago by BigRebel, one of our old members (I talked to him recently about coming back). So how do you rate the state?

This was one of my favorite threads of all time a couple of years ago and I think it is time to do it again. The idea is to choose in order how the different areas of the state rate in overall football strength. Here are the choices:

Louisville

Lexington

NKY

Central Kentucky

Eastern KY

Western KY

Here is how I rate them:

1. Louisville, the big boys are in the Ville and I think that makes Louisville the top area in the state.

2. NKY, Northern KY has great 1A and 3A football.

3. Central Kentucky, two words, Title Town!

4. Western Kentucky, there are several good teams in the western part of the state.

5. Lexington, Catholic can't close the deal and the 4A teams in Lexington overall leave a lot to be desired.

6. Eastern Kentucky, although a few teams have showed some promise as of late, this area is still the weakest area for football in Kentucky by far.

1. NKY- The most state titles in a region. They have 6-A, 5-A, 4-A, 3-A, 2-A, 1-A State titles from the past even back in the old 4 Class system.

2. Louisville- This will ruffle a ton of feahters. If not for Trinity, X, Male, basically 6-A Louisville wouldn't be anything. Now with the emergence of 3-A Lou. Central, it gets #2. Let's think about this. Central is getting Lou. Male students what would be going to Male. IF they don't get those student/athletes does Lou. Central have the same success year in and year out with the new 6 class system?

3. Central KY- Danville and Boyle, NUFF said.

4. Western KY- Bowling Green, Mayfield, Fort Campbell, Paducah Til have helped this region since 6 class system.

5. Eastern KY- I consider this a good region for 3-4 A football.

6. Lex. Area- Probably the most disappointing area in KY. Other then LEX. Cath when was the last time a Lex. Area school won a title. You have to go back pretty far. With Lex being 2nd or sometimes biggest city in KY, depends on what year the census beaurau decides. Either way, the size of the town should produce more championships. I know you can count LCA, but if we are comparing the last 50 years the LEx area is at the bottom.

I will repeat myself from another thread. NKY is the only area in the state that has had ten different schools win a state championship, 14 appear in the state finals, and every school in the area, but Scott, that has had football for more than a decade had made it to at least the third round of the playoffs. Louisville is second, but the facts are that Louisville talent is sectioned off into a couple of schools that have had most of the sucess from the area. Central has emereged recently, but they have also been without a doubt the biggest beneficiary of the six class system that has allowed them to get away from having to beat teams that they couldn't in the past. Danville is titletown. The West has a couple of good programs, but overall, the west is pretty weak. Eastern KY lacks speed, but has many well coached hard playing teams. Lexington is the biggest underachieving area in the state when you measure talent vs. sucess.

^ Please rate them plainspoken.

NKY

Western KY

Central Kentucky

Lexington

Eastern KY

1.NKY

2.Louisville Metro

3.Boyle County

4.Western Kentucky

5.Eastern Kentucky

6.Central Kentucky

7.South Central Kentucky

1. NKY - I hate to admit it, being that I'm a South Central guy (WKY in this poll) but NKY is head and shoulders above in the overall picture. They just care more up there…oh, and there’s that little place across the river that helps a bit with the talent pool.

2. WKY - I put WKY ahead of Louisville because outside of T, X, and Central, Louisville schools can't seem to win outside the city limits. I put them over CKY due to depth of schools. Outside of Danville, Boyle, and John Hardin, CKY football is downright bad for the most part.

3. Louisville - It's a crime what the JCPS does to its non-darling schools. Total ruination of the neighborhood and community pride aspect of high school football. Louisville football is just disgusting with all of its recruiting, bussing, and politics...but there is an undeniable wealth of talent there.

4. CKY - Danville and Boyle are the best concentration of quality football outside T and X in the state. Outside of those two John Hardin has become a force, but one that can't seem to get over the BG hump. Beyond them, most of your schools are struggling.

5. EKY - Smash mouth football played by big boys, but overall, speed is the death of these schools. No amount of coaching can help these kids keep up. Some of the neatest stadiums and most physical football are played here though.

6. Lexington - Remember when someone posted the governing rules for sports in Lexington? Yeah, that pretty much sums up Lex. football. What a tragedy, as that there is tons of talent in the area. Proof that small minded administrations can make an armpit out of a gold mine.

WKY

Central Ky

EKY

I'm biased towards Northern Kentucky football. Highlands, Beechwood, CovCath, NewCath are all State powers. Other schools in NKY are very competitive too.

Is the context of this question historical or a snapshot? As a snapshot, or the state of KY football right now, disregarding history, I'd have to say :

Louisville (T,X, Ballard, Eastern, Male, PRP, Collins)

NKy (HHS, Cov Cath, Beechwood, New Cath)

Central KY (Boyle/Danville)

Western KY

Lexington

Eastern KY

I would say rate the state as you see it today and remember post one is a decade old.

You realize how close together NewCath and Highlands are, correct?

Right now, BG and Mayfield > Boyle and Danville. It's no where close.

1. Lville Area

2. NKY

3. WKY

4. Central KY

5. EKY

6. Lexington Area

For that matter, just about every NKy program up here (which is @ 25+ High Schools?) is within 10-15 miles of each other (as the crow flies).

Great concentration of talent and success.
