Speaking from the perspective of someone who knows little about Kentucky high school football, I would agree with this.

 

I would definitely agree that is a huge issue in some parts of the state, but the saturation of kids to school ratio in Lexington and Louisville shouldn't be that different. I mean, 10-15 minutes down 75 from Cincy and you're in farm land!

 

But I would agree that if Cincy was not there, our saturation of talent would suffer. But schools would close and consolidate also.

I am putting this out there again, and maybe someone will prove me wrong with Louisville, but NKY has ten teams who have won state and 14 teams that have been in the finals. Does Louisville have that type of sucess? Maybe they have historically and I don't know about it.

Something else to take into account with Louisville is that for the longest time, no matter the size of the school, all Louisville schools had to play in the largest class. That didn't change until the 80s or early 90s to the best of my knowledge, how that would have affected the landscape of titles I don't know. I do know though that it created an artificial bottleneck for the longest time in this area. Because lets face it, if Central had to compete in 6A right now despite their size then they might not have any titles. It's possible they may have 1 or 2 but I would think that 2 would be really pushing it.

I would go further to argue that Central wouldn't have any titles if they were playing in 4A or above. They have benefitted from six classes more than any other school in the state.

There was a Military Academy and Louisville Country Day that were in class A. Their programs were not of significance. But the public schools in both the Jefferson County Public Schools and the Louisville Independent Schools as well as the other private schools in Jefferson County were all Class AAA. If we are going by Top 5, it is not close team-by team. Depth in all classes is what NKY has.

Great question. I'm going to go with NKY. We may have a winner.

Agree, top five would be tough but depth overall...

I think it's pretty unfair to list Lex schools as an area when there are only 7 football playing schools in the city and then the surrounding area like Danville is considered Central Ky. Then you list West Ky and put BG, WC in with Mayfield and Tilghman, who are 2 1/2 hrs away. Same with EKy. Do you put Ashland in with Somerset or Corbin? How far away are those from each other. Then where do teams like Bardstown and Shelby Co go. Would they be considered Louisville or Central Ky? Is Somerset Central Ky or EKy? What I'm saying is, when you have a much larger area like EKy and WKy and the # of overall schools is much higher, you're going to have alot more bad teams but also more quality teams.. Truth is, every area on here has 2-3 really good teams and outside of those, it's pretty mediocre or at least not teams capable of winning it all on a yearly basis..

 

NKy has Highlands, far and away above every other team in the area..NCC, Beechwood and Cov Cath, who are all typically Top 3-4 teams in there class.. The rest of the teams in the area are hit and miss or haven't been traditional powers for any length of time..

 

Louisville has T & X who are 2 of the top traditional powers in the state and Central, who's a traditional 3a power. They also have a few others in each class that are Top 5-10 teams in there class,but, like NKy, usually doesn't have anyone else that, year in, year out, will be a Top 5 state contending team..

 

Lex area has Lex Cath, who's usually a Top 5 team in class, but, the other 6a teams are hit and miss and usually end up being punching bags for T and X and even the NKy 6a teams. LCA had a couple of good years, but, I wouldn't call them a longtime traditional power by any means..

 

Central Ky should include Somerset, imo, then Danville, Boyle are always contending. Bardstown, Green Co, Glasgow, Monroe and a few others are solid teams, but, not year in, year out contenders.

 

West Ky has Mayfield and BGreen for sure. Ft Campbell, Murray, WCentral, OB Cath, Tilghman, Hendo and Christian are also solid and typically in the mix, then some occassional good teams like Caldwell, Owensboro, Lone Oak, FSimpson..

 

EKy has Belfry as there top team on an annual basis, but, Bell Co is also right there in that mix.. Hazard is probably next in line with Breathitt, Ashland, JCentral on a tier just below with Corbin, PBurg, Pikeville, Knox next in line..

 

If I had to rank them as a whole, I'd probably go:

 

1) NKy.. Outside of 3a, they're pretty solid. 1a, 2a, 4a is stypically as tough a district in the state and recently have been 2nd strongest in 5a, outside of WKy and 6a, outside of Louisville, so, overall, I'd give them the nod..

 

2) WKy.. Strong in 1a, 2a, 5a, decent in 3a and 4a, weak in 6a, but, typically have 5-6 teams contending every year..

 

3) Lou .. 6a is strong and because of Central, 3a always has a contender. 2a is solid, as well with Desales, Cal. Weak in 1a, 4a and 5a..

 

4) CKy ... Strong in 2a, 4a, decent in 5a, weak in 1a, 3a, 6a..

 

5) EKy ... Strong in 1a, 3a, 4a, weak in the other 3.

 

6) Lex ... Honestly, not enough teams to really say. No 1a, 3a, 5a teams in the area..
