KHSAA/Julian Tackett turning KY into a Football state???

Featured Replies

Based on a few things that I have been hearing it looks like Julian Tackett is really pushing the state into a pro-football state.

There are plans in place to reduce the number of games in a season basketball wise. I believe there are other reductions in other sports, with the exception of football.

Everything seems to be getting cut but football.

The lack of programs at the Sweet 16 is simply ridiculous. Why don't they just contract the programs out? Just because other state championships do not nearly have the demand for products like the Sweet 16, they don't offer them?

There is even chatter of eliminating districts and going with a blind draw and playing on with basketball.

Basketball and baseball will still have their ability to play 936 games in June like they do.

For the record, I've also heard that football will be getting pushed back as well. The official start of practice might not be until August 1, thus moving the start of the season back to Labor Day weekend (or that last Friday in August).

Week 0 is 8/23. So yes, football was moved back a week. Most likely due to heat/humidity.

Where I'm from (mid atlantic states), August 1st, is the official start of football, and games don't begin until the Friday after Labor day. Of course this makes a little more sense when you don't have 5 weeks of playoffs.

How long ago was there a change in the # of games allowed in a basketball season? Officially?

LeeCorso, in general terms isn't it a good thing that the Commish has and continues to emphasis football so that football isn't the red headed step child of the past?

Football pays the bills in the state. Basketball allows them to build nice headquarters and hire extra people.

IMO football needs to be pushed back to avoid heat issues AND eliminate a round or two of the playoffs.

No need to change the basketball season.

Agree on both counts.

You sure about that? The organizational break down financially says otherwise unless I misread the financials.

Football needs to go back to the way it was in the 80's. When only the district champ and runner-up go to playoffs. No sense in a team that goes winless being in the playoffs. When this new system came out 4-5 yrs ago, Louisville Butler was winless got beat bad by St. X last game of the season, then had to turn around and play them again in the first rd of playoffs. First rd football playoffs should be eliminated

I will agree with this if they do it for basketball, baseball and every other sport.

Using that logic, the state needs to class all sports then too

These sports are different with that you can play multiple games in a week where in football you can't.

I don't disagree with that logic but I understand it is the coaches/schools that want the expanded playoffs which puts the KHSAA in a difficult position.
