KHSAA/Julian Tackett turning KY into a Football state???

Featured Replies

You sure about that? The organizational break down financially says otherwise unless I misread the financials.

I know many athletic programs across the stae where the 5-6 home football games bring in close to half of the Athletic Budget that made up soley on Gate Receipts. (and, these are your middle of the road programs, too)

As a matter of fact. It takes Boys and Girls basketball, BOTH, to equal that of what football brings in at these schools (their basketball programs are about like football, too).

I also know a handfull of schools across the state who have actually lost money on the handfull of baseball and softball games they have played this year.

Ever walked into a girls basketball game(s) (JV and Varsity) on a Monday night when it isn't a double header with the Boys? They are struggling to break even.

I know a baseball game played last night that for a FACT took a loss (and, by a loss, what they have to pay out to the gate workers, umpires, etc). This school is a perinnial region contender, too.

I have no doubt, but as for the organization, don't they make more from the basketball state tournament than any other event all year? As for individual schools, I'm quite sure you're correct.
Football needs to go back to the way it was in the 80's. When only the district champ and runner-up go to playoffs. No sense in a team that goes winless being in the playoffs. When this new system came out 4-5 yrs ago, Louisville Butler was winless got beat bad by St. X last game of the season, then had to turn around and play them again in the first rd of playoffs. First rd football playoffs should be eliminated

That'd be fine; so long as they do the same for every other sport.

Basketball goes straight to the region tourney, no district tourney play. The region tourney is made up of the regular season District Champs.

The same goes for baseball, softball, girls basketball, soccer, etc.

And, then there were crickets...............

This was a two year experiment in '06 and then in '07 (the first of 6 classes, which I don't like, but that's for another thread).

I didnt like that either. But, when you think about it, they were just doing in football what they do in basketball, baseball/softball and soccer.

All of those sports play what is essentially the 1st two rounds against their district.

Once again something (like every team making the playoffs in other sports) that is ok for everything else, but for some reason a "crime" in football?

Apples and anvils.

Really? Like those 1 and 2 win teams in basketball vs. those 1 and 2 win teams in football?

Oh, no doubt there. The Sweet 16 is the cash cow.

I haven't heard any clamoring that the basketball season is too long. I haven't heard it started too early. And we have hashed out the differences in once a week games over and over vs. being able to play multiple games per week in the football forum. You must admit they aren't the same in comparison. Seems like the football guys always want to bring up basketball.

I'm a football guy and football starts way too early. It needs to be bumbed back a week.

But, like I said in my original statement. Basketball gets practically an entire season in June to play 900 + games, too.

But, as far as the length of each season, They just need to back football up a week, which would back up the start of basketball, and so on

I went back and looked at some dates from this past football and basketball season and both sports hovered around 105 days in length from the start of the season to the championship game in that sport.

I don't think that there are as many people upset about the number of teams vs. the way it used to be and you had to earn a spot in the football playoffs. There's 6 champs, only one in hoops. Temps of 100degrees in football not in basketball. There's a dead period for both.

If basketball was to class, and there was 6 champs, I may agree about the post season structure change perhaps. But again, way too many differences in the 2 to compare.

These sports are different with that you can play multiple games in a week where in football you can't.

Ah my friend, Football teams play 3 games a week, (and some players do play multiple times per week.)

Not varsity. But I see where you are going with this. And there are limits set by the association to govern it.

I was referring to the postseason. Football is going to take longer to complete because they play one game a week. In basketball, baseball, etc they play multiple games a week so the playoffs can be done in a shorter amount of time. Football playoffs take forever and the 1-4 games are rarely competitive.

I have never been for the expanded playoff format in the state. District winner and runner-up is all that should get to go to the playoffs. Wrap things up by thanksgiving weekend and then it's on to basketball the 1st week of December. No need to cutback on the number of basketball games played by each school. If anything I would let them play 2 or 3 more games each season.
