KHSAA/Julian Tackett turning KY into a Football state???

Featured Replies

Basketball will gladly take a 10% reduction in games, if football did the same.

14 game max season, no bye week.

This year first game would have been Aug. 18th and last game Nov. 17.

Basketball practice begins Nov. 1.

Mandatory that football coaches allow freshman and sophomores go to basketball practice Nov. 1 but still dress in playoff games on Friday if they are not on 2 deep roster.

Mandatory basketball coaches let freshman and sophomores go to baseball practice at end of regular season.

Basketball gets 4 weeks in summer - 2 in May and 2 in June. Football gets 1.5 in June.(You get spring practice).

Makes all sports better.

Too much common sense for them to go by though.

In football only the winner and runnerup should go to playoffs. In basketball Districts have been obsolete for 30 years. Way back there, when there were 8-12 teams in each district, it made sense. We had 750 high schools. But since consolidation erased two thirds of those, we're way overdue for streamlining. I would favor one of these two structures : l. Every team plays every other team in its region once a season, alternating home and away. Seed teams by record. Seed each region 1-16 and play it off in one week. Or... 2. The Class A schools in each region are all placed in a District. They play for the District championship, which earns the winner a berth in the Regional. The larger schools all receive byes straight into the Region. So, for example, in the 10th Region, Paris, St. Pat, Nicholas, Robertson, Augusta, Bracken, Silver Grove and Brossart would play through district and the winner would go on to the Region. In the 9th, Dayton, Bellevue, Newport, NCC, Ludlow, Beechwood, Latin and Holy Cross would play through the district and the winner would go on to the Region. But this current setup, where we spend a whole week getting rid of two teams, is inefficient. This week we would save would allow the Sweet Sixteen to be permanently moved up a week, like it was this year, to come ahead of the college tournaments, which cut into attendance.

You still have a district week, region week, and state week in your plan, just like this year.

In the second one, yes. Not in the first. We could always play the Class A District the last week of the regular season and let the bigger schools finish up with two more games against other large schools.

Who does everyone think pays for the athletic departments at some of these schools. In Boone County the school system only pays the coaches salaries and mow the grass. That is why their is ZERO teams outside of football that use buses to transport kids to the games. Football has to pay for the buses themselves out of their money. Where does their money come from....gate receipts, which they have to split 50/50 with the athletic department. The athletic department then takes that money and supports the other sports, I think boys basketball does the same thing.

This is a big reason why there will be no reduction in football games or the amount that makes the playoffs.

This was a two year experiment in '06 and then in '07 (the first of 6 classes, which I don't like, but that's for another thread).

I didnt like that either. But, when you think about it, they were just doing in football what they do in basketball, baseball/softball and soccer.

All of those sports play what is essentially the 1st two rounds against their district.

Once again something (like every team making the playoffs in other sports) that is ok for everything else, but for some reason a "crime" in football?

If you could determine a way to eliminate the district tournament in basketball I would not have a problem with it. I dont think all teams deserve to go to the post season. But like someone posted earlier, You would have to go to a class system in basketball to eliminate districts. Also a huge difference is a basketball district tournament can be done in 5 days. Basketballs post season can be done in 3 weeks.

That is fair. Screw over the small schools and make battle to get there while the big schools get automatic.

I just don't see how cutting the number of games in any sport helps the kids. They get four years to play, in many cases only one or two years of varsity. Shouldn't we try to get them all the games we can?

As for reducing the playoffs in football it would help from a competition standpoint possibly because teams would have to improve to make the playoffs. But I think you could argue now that football in the state of Kentucky is improving. More teams making the playoffs leads to longer tenure for coaches. There are a lot of good coaches in Kentucky, many of whom need time to build their programs, if the current system helps with that I'm for it. Kids need continuity if the relationships around them are positive.

In my area two of the most improved programs are Lewis County and Bath County. I'd argue that the current class system and alignment has helped both programs. Experiencing success has lead to increased numbers at both schools.

If two teams making the playoffs was the correct answer then why wasn't football as a whole as good in Kentucky in the past? Leave it for a while longer and see what happens. The only thing I'd change is I'd try to eliminate four team district so every team has earned their playoff appearance on the field. May have to go to give classes to make it work but that would be an improvement.

Also, if a 1-9 team makes the playoffs, is excited to be there, and get humiliated by a state power who really suffers? I can remember trips that West Carter has made to Belfry in which the kids were just excited to have earned a playoff birth which hasn't happened but once or twice in school history.

State powers get a chance to work on things and get players playoff experience. Players that have worked hard all year, for their entire careers. Focus on the kids and not the inconvenience of going to a game that will likely be a blowout. As for coaches who don't like one sport running into their season, it is a reality now days. Most sports are year round commitments. There are a lot worse things our athletes could be doing.

I will agree with this if they do it for basketball, baseball and every other sport.

That'd be fine; so long as they do the same for every other sport.

Basketball goes straight to the region tourney, no district tourney play. The region tourney is made up of the regular season District Champs.

The same goes for baseball, softball, girls basketball, soccer, etc.

And, then there were crickets...............

OR, we could go to six classes for all other sports so that all sports really are playing by the same rules. How's that sound?

Anytime a thread like this gets started it's hilarious reading the pro-football supporters posts. I REALLY like high school football, but you guys always amaze me with the lengths you'll go to to try to continue having your cake and eating it too.

You want everyone in the playoffs, fine go to one class. Heck, go to two or three, and I'll still let everyone in. You can't have six classes, and then cry foul when all the other true team sports (baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, basketball) have one.

We've even got Ru on hear calling football the former "red headed step-child" of the state. Really? I must have missed that era. Hilarious.

I have no doubt, but as for the organization, don't they make more from the basketball state tournament than any other event all year? As for individual schools, I'm quite sure you're correct.

You are correct, they make FAR more on the boys basketball state tournament than the football playoffs, as a matter of fact I believe they make more on the girl's state tournament than the football championships!!

How long ago was there a change in the # of games allowed in a basketball season? Officially?

Not too long ago, maybe 3-4 years. Heard they're thinking about cutting the # of games in basketball because of parents calling their state legislators and complaining there are too many Christmas tournaments and they can't go anywhere over Christmas. Why not leave it at 30 and let each school principal/AD/coach decide how many games they can play. Just because you CAN play 30 games doesn't mean everyone HAS to play 30!!

I'm a football guy and football starts way too early. It needs to be bumbed back a week.

But, like I said in my original statement. Basketball gets practically an entire season in June to play 900 + games, too.

But, as far as the length of each season, They just need to back football up a week, which would back up the start of basketball, and so on

I went back and looked at some dates from this past football and basketball season and both sports hovered around 105 days in length from the start of the season to the championship game in that sport.

Football has 2 weeks of spring practice AND they play passing league games in the summer, I'm like Spindoc, why do football guys always have to bring up basketball. ALL the sports can do things as soon as school is out if they want, not just basketball!!

I have never been for the expanded playoff format in the state. District winner and runner-up is all that should get to go to the playoffs. Wrap things up by thanksgiving weekend and then it's on to basketball the 1st week of December. No need to cutback on the number of basketball games played by each school. If anything I would let them play 2 or 3 more games each season.

EXCELLENT post!!!

Wrong.

Football can't do 7 on 7 against outside competition in June.

Football can only do it in July after dead period, and only then, has about 2 weeks of it WHILE trying to practice, before they 7 on 7's stop due to the rules (can't have anymore after your first day of pads without them counting as a srimmage, which you only get one of).
