March 2, 201313 yr True story... Pharmacy line. Pharmacist tells mom and daughter that the antibiotic they just got filled could negate the effects of the daughter's birth control pills. Mom looks at daughter and says, "Honey, you're almost 18. You'll lose your card if you aren't pregnant by then." Who needs welfare reform?

While I understand the initial reaction of disgust, I can understand the mom's comment. If the girl doesn't have a child, she isn't eligible for Medicaid. It's sad on a variety of levels.

March 3, 201313 yr I think we all understand what the mom meant. What do you mean when you say you understand the comment? Her daughter isn't able to go to college. She's not able to get a job. Unless she has a kid, her daughter is screwed.
March 3, 201313 yr I'm not saying it's right. Obviously it's awful. But I can empathize with feeling like it's the only solution.
March 3, 201313 yr Her daughter isn't able to go to college. She's not able to get a job. Unless she has a kid, her daughter is screwed. Why can't she go to college? Why can't she get a job?
March 3, 201313 yr I know a family whose daughter was a good, but not a great student. She couldn't get a scholarship, and couldn't afford college. She became a single mom and guess what? Scholarship! If she had worked minimum wage and tried to pay her way she would have struggled to make it. Pathetic.
March 3, 201313 yr Why can't she go to college? Why can't she get a job? Because she can't afford it. Because she isn't able to get a job that offers healthcare. I mean people are in these situations. Instead of investing on programs that can remove them from the situation, we put money into caring for them while they're in the situation. I fault the programs, not the people.

You don't fault people for what accounts to theft from taxpayers? Seems A little misguided. Why can't she work full time and go to school? Its hard but not near impossible. If she doesnt like school why cant she learn a trade? Sorry making excuses for lazy people is what helped get us in this mess.

She can't get a job at Walmart? Why not?

I don't think it's as simple as categorizing people as hard working or lazy. Why is it theft? I just don't think it's that simple. How do you know she didn't learn a trade? You don't know every person's situation and I just think it's arrogant and simple minded to just yell "BUM GET A JOB!"
