I know a LOT of Catholics...and I don't know a single one who thinks that identifying as a Protestant predestines you away from salvation.

Unfortunately there are some goof ball Catholics who do believe this. Pretty much all of them are Sedevacantists. Sedevacantist comes from the phrase "Sede Vacante" which translated literally means "vacant seat". In regards to to the church, a period of Sede Vacante means that the position or chair of the pope is vacant due to the pope's death or as will happen Feb 28th, resignation. Sedevacantists believe that Vatican II was heresy and the popes since Vatican II have been heretics and therefore are not valid popes so in their view, the pope's chair has been empty since the mid 1960's during Vatican II. One of the issues Sedevacantists disagree with Vatican II about is the idea of salvation is impossible for non Catholics. The Catholic Church has never officially held this position but there were many in the church leadership who did and the issues was being argued for centuries. Those in favor of no salvation for non Catholics saw there numbers start declining in the late 1700's/early 1800's and it was at Vatican II that the church officially pronounced that the view that non Catholics cannot receive salvation was heresy. Sedevacantists are validly baptised Catholics. Where they differ from 99.9999999999% of Catholics is that they are not in communion with the pope. Out of the 1.3 billion Catholics, I believe world wide Sedevacantists numbers may not surpass 10,000 so they are not very common.

That would be fair if it weren't for his family's beliefs that he supports. If he goes there and tells the congregation that they should not think of Catholics as "satanic cults" and not think that Mormons and Islams are going to hell and that gays aren't "brainwashing" then I'd say "hear, hear."

Aren't all monotheistic religions covered in bigotry? In the Bible, non-believers in Jesus can sometimes be viewed as "anti-Christs" or false prophets. In the Quran, non-believers are infidels. I think if you talk to any priest, monk, shiek, witch-doctor, you'll find doctrine which is offensive to some. This church is extreme, but I doubt they are the only protestant church that has taken a strong stance against Islam, Mormonism, and homosexuality.

You can be tired of them all you want. This one seems to be the most damning IMO. You have a person who is held up as a great young man who exemplifies Christ's teachings going to support a bigot. That's not a story?

 

No. He's going to speak at his church. He writes him a big check and you've got something. Because he speaks at his church doesn't mean his views are the same. You can make that stretch, like you are inclined to do, and that no more makes it true than you typing it. You have no clue what he thinks about this guys views, haven't heard him speak there yet, have no idea what he'll say, and can't provide one stitch of evidence of proof to support it, which is what you consistently clamor for.

I know quite a few Catholics too - mostly family. They believe their salvation is through the church, hence those outside the [Catholic] church are not saved. Not saying this is what Catholicism teaches, but in practice most that I know believe this.

Fair point on supporting the family. I guess I suppor the Catholic church even though I don't support every one of its causes.

I've never heard him quoted as being negative towards other religions though. The fact that he dated the girl for a while tells me he doesn't hold some of the views that others apparently do concerning the Catholic faith.

Let's quit the pity party for Tebow. I've supported him as a kid/man on here (not as a qb though) from day one. I'm just shocked he would speak at a place run by such a hateful man.

I'd argue it's a bit different though. In the President' case he obviously separated himself from Rev Wright(Certainy fair to question motives) . In this case, Tebow is going to support what appears to be IMO a whacked out religious nut.

 

It is no different.

 

One separated himself to win an election.

 

The other may view it as an opportunity to speak about God to those who need it most.

 

If he says Catholics are going to hell and LDS is a cult at the speaking engagement that is one thing.

 

If he talks about the Lord and what he has done for him and can do for them, that is another.

Understood, I just believe if he truly had those feelings against Catholics he wouldn't date one no matter what her station in life. Unless he's a total fraud (possible) he's not doing it for the sex as he claims he's waiting for marriage.
