I'd say he's more well known for his politics. He pops up every now and then with a controversial proclamation or something, but he's more prevalent during campaign season as candidates seek his endorsement or to have him speak at their events. I can't speak to all of his religious views, but he's the kind that seems to believe God would endorse a particular candidate and his sermons are just about indistinguishable from stump speeches. I find that kind of thing noxious.

He seems like someone whose name I should recognize, but I don't know of him. The bolded is a major turn-off for me. While I certainly believe there are teachings from Scripture that can carry over into the political world, I don't want to be part of a church where that kind of stuff is the norm.

I was raised to believe that my relationship with God is to be a personal, private thing (has a lot to do with being raised Catholic in a Baptist-dominated area, where my Christianity credentials were regularly questioned by those who think a lot like Tebow), and that those who make a big show of it are less about the faith and more about the show in an effort to display how holier-than-thou they are.

I don't believe it's for show. I believe it reflects what he does in private. But neither of us can know that for sure.

 

I don't believe my relationship with God is to be personal & private. Just the opposite, Jesus commands to go and make more disciples by sharing the news of the gospel with others.

 

However, I do think that you raise an excellent point on the motives for why someone does what they do in regard to their faith. Jesus regularly condemned the religious gurus of his day because they fasted, gave money, & prayed in such a way to draw attention to themselves. It's not at all wrong to pray in a venue where people will be watching & listening, but the pray-er has to make sure they are talking to an audience of One & not the other audience.

Seriously, though, and I think Jim knows this (and if you don't, Jim, please know this now): He's one of my favorites. I'm not really sure we agree on anything at all (:lol:), but he's my favorite curmudgeon on Planet Earth. I say that with 100% sincerity & not just for show (see what I did there, Jim? :lol:).

Because he is not shy about expressing his faith. Many people do not like that and it makes them uncomfortable. I would guess that most people are more private in their faith and when someone is outgoing about their faith they believe them to be fakes. Accounts from people who have spent time with Tebow lead me to believe he is honest about his faith. Particularly when some of those accounts are from people who don't neccessarily support him.
