I know that you're probably just talking about high school gyms, but just for kicks I'll toss in the gym at Covington Turners. I don't know of an older gym than that in all of the Northern Kentucky area.

I don't know about the oldest, but Highlands has to be the worst. Lack of space, air, or seats keeps me from attending games regularly. Last game I was at was against Cov Cath and the floor was wet because of how packed and hot the gym was with sweaty people. It was terrible. I hope that's coming up soon on the phases of remodeling. In my opinion it is more in need of replacement the the money they sank into that Performing Arts Center. But I don't appreciate art nearly as much as sports.

I was in Augusta's gym in the mid 2000's and it looked very nice. They must have renovated it before I was there.

If your including Augusta, I think you have to include St. Pat's in Maysville. Although I admit, I have no clue how old it is.

If your including Augusta and St Pat's, head on down to Henry County. It's a classic arena and a great place to watch a game.

At the risk of straying too far from this thread's original intent, I get a big kick out of knowing about old buildings, high school or not, that still have their original gyms in them.

 

An example would be an old building that sits on the corner of 4th & Scott in Covington that was built probably around the Cival War that originally housed a Masonic Lodge that had a gym on the 2nd floor. It presently is someone's apartment, and as recent as 5 years ago the old fashioned backboard and hoop was just sitting for quite some time (like for a few years) on the fire escape on the side of the building facing Scott St. I personally have never stepped foot in the building, but have been told by someone that has, that sure enough it was an apartment with a gym floor and hoops. How cool would that be?

 

The old YMCA on Madison in Covington hasn't been a Y for probably 25 years or more, but I've always wondered if they kept the old gym intact or remodeled the whole place?

 

Anyhow, if anyone knows about old buildings that have gyms in them I'd love to hear about them. Quite often you can't tell... there's probably buildings that I've passed hundreds of times and didn't realize that there was a gym inside. Just recently I discovered that the old Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Cincy at 4th & Sycamore has a real old fashioned gym in the back of it's building...

My mom attended a Highlands game to watch my son and she graduated in 1965, she said the gym looked the same as it did almost 50 yrs ago outside of the new floor and goals obviously. So Highlands gym is atleast 50 yrs old.

That's correct, I think they refer to it as 'the girl's gym'. As of a few years ago, they still used it for some middle school games. Venerable old place, reminded me of the gym in Hoosiers.

If I'm not mistaken Henry Co. is the longest running regional sight played in the state. Think they started playing the regionals there in "61". It is a great atomosphere, reminds me of Mason Co.'s gym but has more of a classic feel. Can get really hot in the upper sections during a crowded game. Kudos to Henry Co., which is not that big of a school to have the foresight to see the future.

The School on the hill opened its doors in 1955 . The Conerstone was laid in 1954 . from the Info I can gather CCH's Gym was opened on on Jan 29th 1955 so they both opened at approximately the same time

The two schools were designed simultaneously - actually using the same basic floorplan and just reversing the locations of the gyms to suit the layout of the piece of land they were being built on. They actually used the same basic premise for building St. Agnes' school building as well...athough for St. Agnes, they cut off the top floor and went without a gym all together in the original construction.

 

These are actually the architect's original models of the two buildings from back in the 50's. New Cath on the top, Cov Cath below.

NCC and CCH are the oldest unless Highlands was opened before them. A date on the first 2 has been established but don't know about Highlands. Know it was there in 1959, but not sure how long before that.
