PurplePride92 Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Randy Moss is the greatest WR ever in his opinion and in mine as well. Randy Moss is also misunderstood to the point that rational discussions about him are dismissed due to people's conception about him. http://www.tennessean.com/article/20130131/SPORTS01/301310075/Randy-Moss-says-Tennessee-Titans-blackballed-him Part of those misconceptions are indeed Randy's own doing. I can admit that. However, Randy Moss has never accepted losing well. Ever. When Randy Moss was at Marshall he ran track his sophomore season and won the conference title in the 55 meters and 200 meters. Randy agreed to run track for Marshall as a sophomore and won the Southern Conference indoor track 55-meters and 200-meter championships. He had not raced competitively for four years, yet his time in the 200 (21.15 seconds) was one of the best in the country that year. He left his trophy on the bus. When asked if he was going to get his trophy Randy replied,"forget that trophy, I want a ring, man. Shoot." Randy has always been about winning. On the gridiron. People make a big deal about him walking off of the field against the Redskins in 2004. Was he alone? I could have sworn two other Vikings walked off with him. There were two seconds left when the Vikings were attempting an onside kick which they didn't recover. Teammates were mad and it was possibly the straw that broke the camel's back for Moss in Minnesota. Could be. Does that change my opinion? No. Moss said he isn't going to get in a shouting match with Jerry about who is the greatest but I will. When confronted with Moss' statements Jerry replied with the same retort his fans always say. Check the stats. I say check the quarterbacks. Jerry Rice joined the NFL in 1985. From 1985-1998 he had two quarterbacks. Two Hall of Fame quarterbacks. One of which is considered one of the greatest quarterbacks ever in Joe Montana and his able bodied successor Steve Young. Randy Moss played with 17 different quarterbacks in his Hall of Fame career. Only one is a Hall of Famer......and he broke records with that dude. Jerry Rice had Montana and Young for 15 years and then he had Jeff Garcia, Rich Gannon, Rick Mirer and Matt Hasselback. Those are his quarterbacks. Let's look at the quarterbacks Randy Moss has had over the years. Brad Johnson Spergeon Wynn Todd Bauman Daunte Culpepper Andrew Walter Aaron Brooks Kerry Collins(twice) Rusty Smith Vince Young Brett Favre(2010 Brett Favre...last year of his career Brett Favre) Matt Cassel Jeff George Randall Cunningham Tom Brady Alex Smith Colin Kaepernick Such an awesome list and yet he still has 982 receptions, 15,292 yards, 156 touchdowns and averaged 15.6 yards per catch. Quick question. How come when the greatest RBs are discussed Emmitt Smith is never the greatest even though he ran for more yards than anyone ever but when the greatest WR is a discussion the stats come into play immediately? Even Jerry Rice said check the stats. Randy Moss revolutionized the WR position. Everybody wanted a 6'4" WR with speed, hands and a vertical. It took the NFL 5 years to recognize Plaxico Burress was just tall like Moss and that was it. After Randy Moss 6'4" WRs with speed(but not 4.25 Randy Moss speed) began to fall out of the sky but none ever duplicated Moss. While it can be argued that Moss is the greatest WR ever he has been regarded as one of the best athletes to ever play the game and the scariest WR to line up against as well. Maybe the title 'greatest deep threat ever' is more appropriate but I'll still ride hard for Moss as the GWROAT. Jerry Rice to Randy Moss: check the stats - NFL - ESPN As for misunderstood I'll go back to his deep disdain for losing. Teammates from every team loved playing with him and having him as a teammate. Moss was never the media darling like Rice was and he very rarely spoke to the media at all. When he did you could count on a quotable. "I'll play when I want to play", "I'm the greatest receiver to ever play the game", his comments about the 1970 Marshall plane crash.."The plane crash was before my time. I don't try to go back in the past and say this football game is for the people in the plane crash. I've seen the burial ground. I went up there and looked at the names. It was a tragedy, but it really wasn't nothing big." and there are many many more on his Wikipedia page. Moss' knack for saying exactly what he feels at that particular moment when he is talking is what has made him a lightning rod for controversy since the day a mic was stuck in front of him. That is why I say he is misunderstood. He said he plays when he wants to play but of all the hundreds of teammates he played with you won't find many who didn't like calling him a teammate. You won't find many who don't like him. Look hard enough and you'll find some who agree Randy is the greatest receiver ever. Warren Sapp said he could be. If Randy gave up on plays like everyone wants to say he did all of the time then why do his teammates like him? To this day Tom Brady has never uttered one bad word about Randy Moss and rumors are that Randy may be back in New England next season. If you read the Tennessean link I posted you'll see that even Jeff Fisher liked Moss. Belichick likes Moss. Why do these repsected coaches like a guy who takes plays off? Makes no sense to me. I've said all I can say for now. I'll just wait for the haterade now..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqdDFWTQIww
Randy Parker Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Always thought he had a great first name.
PurplePride92 Posted February 5, 2013 Author Posted February 5, 2013 Always thought he had a great first name. Word up. Probably explains why you are my bro.
Randy Parker Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Honestly, I loved watching Moss in his prime.
Watusi Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Moss is one of those athletes that I wish my exposure to him was limited to his playing time on the field. He is as talented as anyone to play the game.
hrcarrier Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Honestly, I loved watching Moss in his prime. I did too.
Hellbird Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Something people seem to forget about when it comes to Jerry rice is the fact that he was a total punk when he played. He was one of the biggest whiners there was and would cry when Joe Monatana got MVP for the SB because he thought he was the only one who deserved it. When Rice came out with his comments this past week about what Moss said, it didn't surprise me at all with his response. It was just as arrogant as I expected from Rice. Moss was a better receiver, he could catch anything thrown in his direction. Made some of the best and toughest catches there were and made them look easy. Rice just had the numbers and played on better teams.
Greg Page Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Agree that Moss is the best after reading PP92's dissertation! I never was a big Rice fan anyway. The list of QB's did it for me.
jolmstead Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 I have seen Randy Moss catch balls that Jerry Rice would have never even gotten a hand on at any point in his career. The only receiver playing today that compares to Moss is Calvin Johnson.
banana slug Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Excellent post PP; you've presented some facts and some editorial to support your opinion. However, I would encourage YOU to be more open minded on this topic. Not everyone that disagrees with you is close minded or a RM hater. Quite frankly, that diminishes your argument as it comes off as sophomoric cynicism. I believe RM is clearly the second best WR ever. Jerry Rice is clearly the best; Rice Bio; 3 Super Bowl Rings, 13 Pro Bowls, 1549 receptions (445 more than Gonzalez at #2); 22,895 yards (6961 ahead of TO); 197 receiving TD's (44 more than RM at #2); 208 TD's (33 more than Emmit); known as one of the best blockers at his position all-time; in 2010, was ranked #1 on The Top 100: NFL's Greatest players Rice's work ethic and off-season conditioning is legendary. He did more with less talent than any other player in the history of the NFL. His combine speed was only 4.71. He was considered the best 'route-runner' ever due to his dedication, work ethic, and practice time. Moss Bio: 0 SB Rings, 7 Pro Bowls, numerous NFL records also. 14,869 yards (6th all-time); 954 receptions (10th all time); Moss has done some tremendous, yet unreported things for charity, including his own Foundation for kids. He is better known for his frequent bad attitude, lackluster performances, and bad quotes. He has experienced some off-field incidents including bumping a police woman with his car, marijuana arrests, failed drug tests in college, dating violence (battery against his girlfriend and refusing to allow her to get treatment). His on-field behavior has been even more borish;admitting to poor effort, work ethic and quitting on plays, mock-mooning the Packers fans, bashing is teammates and coaches in a Vikings presser. Several former teammates and opponents have publicly stated a lack of respect for Moss. He was out of football for a year, because no one wanted him or felt like he had game left. I heard a few ex-NFL players question his effort in the Super Bowl. Someone on ESPN radio (didn't catch who it was, but got the impression it was an ex-player) said "if he even would've jumped or made an effort, that may have changed the outcome of the play" (paraphrased). I think Moss played like it was a ProBowl, not a Super Bowl. I think the 49ers and their QB realized that he wasn't willing to battle for it and stopped targeting him. Kaepernic avoided throwing to him on a couple crucial plays, even when he was wide open. JMHO
75center Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 I think PP92 and Banana Slug have both posted very good arguments in favor or opposed to Randy Moss. Well done.

Kaepernic avoided throwing to him on a couple crucial plays, even when he was wide open. JMHO I like the above post I never argued with Moss being a good wide receiver, But he is more noted for the negative things more than his skill, you have to look in a stat book to know how good he was, due to the fact you didnt see it on the feild play after play. I don't think he is misunderstood at all..............Wasn't sure what that met in your post and still don't, most the opinions I have of him were supported by his own self-admittance......While he is great, and has been very talented and maybe he has revolutionized the position of WR, at the end of the day he is not a winner, or a go getter........you look at some of the other questionable characters in the NFL, that are still coveted as great heroes, Lawrence Taylor, was a grinder worked hard, played hurt down or up, Ray Lewis--nuff said, Even Ricky Williams after his vacation came back and worked and played hard ALL GAME! MOSS IS NOT THAT GUY.
Jumper_Dad Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Anyone else remember this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrL6PqJjvBQ
BIG BLACK JACK Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 "If I can't get to it, nobody can get to it." --Randy Moss
uselessinfo Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 PP.....he had Kerry Collins twice..........What more could a receiver ask for......................:idunno: In all seriousness you do present an excellent case for him. I also agree he is not as egregious as many make him out to be. Not sure that I really can make a decision on who is the greatest but certainly you have Moss and Rice then a gap..........................
