March 10, 201412 yr Over the weekend I went to Open Range and along with trying out my new night sights on my Glock 23, I rented a Ruger 1911, I believe it was a model SRT or something like that. From what I was told, it is a fairly new model from Ruger. Having no experience of 1911's till then I had nothing to compare it to but I liked the feel of it and when shooting, once I got the hang of it, I was able to keep a decent grouping, a hair tighter than my Glock 23. It did jam a few times though whereas my Glock fired fired flawlessly. I was hoping that the Kimber 1911 would be turned back in to the rental desk so I could rent it too and compare the two of them but whoever had it (may have been the guy to my left when shooting) hadn't turned it in yet. The guys on my right and left were having troubles with their 1911's also. On the right was a Para Ordinance the guy had bought for 580 recently. Nice looking, but when he fired, when the slide racked, the fresh round was flying out of the gun instead of loading in the chamber. I think a gun smith needs to work on that. The guy on my left was shooting I think a Kimber and it may have been the rental I was wanting the try out. I had a misfeed also. Overall, if I do decide to get a 1911, I think I will suck it up and pay for a Sig or a Kimber but that will be a while. There are so many versions of the full size Sigs and Kimbers, I have no idea which I would get even when I decide on Sig or Kimber.

You're the first I have heard that regarding Kimber. I hear so much good about Kimber and Sig I would have a tough time deciding. The jam on the one to the left of me (I think it was a Kimber) I assumed was do more to the fact the gun ranges admit they have a tough time staying on top of cleaing their rental guns and I do know 1911's can be finicky if you slack off on the cleaning and lubing.
March 13, 201412 yr Kimber was high on my list at one point, just have to many first hand experiences with magazine and extraction issues - from dads gun and many friends. If you are going to shoot it and it not be a safe queen, Kimber isn't what I would go with. What is your budget? Welcome to Novak's You could buy a base gun and send there.....it gets expensive though. March 13, 201412 yr My Kimber has never misfired, nor had an extraction issue. Not one. ^ Same with my Colt Combat Commander 1911.

I am guessing your Kimber gets better care, cleaning and lubing than most guns at the rental desk so that does not surprise me. Had the Ruger 1911 been cleaner and better lubricrated, I probably would have had few jams. Still trying to decide if I want my next gun to be a good 1911 (Sig or Kimber) or a S&W 686 .357 Mag. Wouldn't surprise me if I end up with both some day. Sort of waiting to see what the price and availability of .45 ACP and .357 Mag do. I recently ordered 1000 rounds of .40 S&W for $290 and saw on another site a box of 500 for $140, that is cheaper than 9mm I am seeing. I keep seeing .45 ACP at around .40 a round and .357 Mag at .47 a round. I have been somewhat surprised how cheap 5.56/.223 has been and how cheap 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 used to be before the craziness in Russia/Crimea started up.
March 18, 201412 yr Well, I went back to Open Range and the Kimber was available so I rented it. Nice gun. I believe it was the Tactical or something like that. The only thing I didn't care for it was the grips. Even with my big hands, my thumb was not able to reach the magazine release so the grips would be the first thing I would change out. I really did like the gun overall, shot well. If (most likely when) I buy a 1911, I am 99% sure it will be a Kimber or Sig. I haven't found a place that rents Sig 1911's. Saying that, it would not replace my Glock, my Glock would still be my every day carry also. The Kimber or Sig would be my fun at the range gun.
March 19, 201412 yr We need to get together and you can shoot mine. I have both. Would love to. Saturday afternoons work best for me. I will bring a few boxes of .45.
