You've been attacked by a dog... multiple times. Yet you fear what has never done you any harm, or at least have never hinted of a gun ever doing you any harm? I find that funny! :lol:

 

I hear you. You know about guns. I know next to nothing about guns other than the fact that I can kill someone if I have one and someone can kill me if they have one. And it can happen fast. Accidentally or on purpose. Yes. That freaks me out way more than any dog. I survived those dog attacks and because of stricter leash laws and penalties you don't see dogs roaming the neighborhoods like you used to when I was a kid so I definitely don't fear loose dogs like I did when I was younger. I also know how to handle myself and others around loose dogs or dogs with irresponsible owners. I know dogs like you know guns so there you have it. If I see someone walking down the street exercising their open carry rights I will not feel safer. Just the way it is and if it's funny to the gun toters then so be it. I get to laugh when you guys cross the street when you see a French Poodle.

:lol: I too know how to handle dogs, but little lap dogs aren't fearsome, a swift kick will do the trick. Point is, you've never been attacked with someone with a gun, too many people have trouble controlling their dogs even when on a leash (especially women with medium to large dogs). How often have you been out for a walk and seen someone pull their gun? How often have you seen a dog get away from their owner? Dogs still run loose, law or no law. We have strict leash laws here too, yet I see dogs running loose often, I never see anyone brandishing their firearm while out for a walk. Hell, KY has been open carry for as long as I can remember and I've yet to see someone walk down the street with their 45 strapped to their side. Yes, dogs can and do kill and when they don't kill and maim (which is more often), it's often vicious.

I am used to being on the "wrong" side on BGP. But in my "real" life I know more people who believe as I do on this issue than not. And I also feel that you raise a great point with exploring the reasons why people feel they need to be armed.

The fact is that the vast majority of people are not armed even with more and more getting CCDWs. But there is a deterrent effect of the 'possibility' of anyone being armed. The criminal/unstable element can not assume that should they be armed that they will have the upper hand.

 

I do not believe anyone wants to have lots of open carry walking around and the CCDWs need to be very responsible. But the possibility of CCDWs being around is the main prevention to bad things happening. Laws that would remove that deterrent are probably what most people are most concerned about. When there a bad guy with a gun the only the thing that will likely stop them is a good guy - with a gun. Portland Mall recently is an excellent example of that.

Well, lets explore it. Just a few that comes to mind:

 

Criminal activity up in many areas and police funding down.

Often, police response takes minutes when there are only seconds to spare.

Police show up after the crime, not during.

Women would rather not be raped. Women are largely the ones with CC these days.

Many people have to work or live in areas where there are gangs.

Many people have to work or live in areas where there are illegal drugs, we all know how violent that can be.

Sometimes, regardless of where you live, trouble comes looking for you.

It makes protection easy for all who carry.

You can help someone else being attacked.

The average number of people killed in mass shootings when stopped by police is 14.29. The average number of people killed in a mass shooting when stopped by a civilian is 2.33

Conceal Carry saves lives.

There's noting criminal or insecure in being pro-active. Dead lasts an awfully long time.

What makes me uncomfortable is that I know NOTHING about that stranger with a gun. Granted, I know nothing about the unarmed strangers either, but I'm willing to look them in the eye and strike up a conversation. An armed one? Get me the heck outta there!

 

I do believe you when you say you do not have disdain for guns but I do believe you have an illogical fear of people in public carrying them. Back during the warm spell we had a few weeks ago, I was out riding my bike in the parks after work, I noticed a walker carrying a side arm when I stopped for a drink. I really can't think of any reason to fear him. When I thought about how it gets dark so early and the parks were not very busy this time of year and how easy a target that makes people such as the jogger attacked in the Cincinnati park last year, I really concluded he was pretty smart to have it with him. More so for the women in the park after work when it gets dark early and not many people around.

That was the point of my thread I started a day or so ago. I'm searching for an answer other than 'it's my constitutional right'.

 

Isn't this the point? If not, then let's just put limints on all Constitutional Rights. Limits not being able to incriminate yourself, limits on voting, limits on unreasonable search & seizure, limits on freedom of speech.

No one needs to worry about law abiding citizens, regardless of the law.

 

On the contrary, everyone needs to worry about non-law abiding citizens, regardless of the law.

The fact that she said it made me laugh out loud.

I was attacked by a dog as a child also. Multiple times. Was even told that one of the dogs was racist. Much like guns irresponsible owners will cause problems. The same way you can't tell if a dog owner is irresponsible until it is too late is the same for gun owners.

 

PP I am sure that was traumatic and not funny at the time but I literally laughed out loud that someone would try to tell you a dog was racist when you were a kid... WOW!!! People never cease to amaze me.
