Their tacos are fantastic. Not as good as Django's but they're still great.

Love Southern Smoke BBQ in Newport. Opened about a month ago. They make their own sauce daily and the only cook for the current day. Really fresh. Great stuff.

 

Not a fan...

Went to Kelly's in the lobby of the Raddison for lunch today. The buffet was very good. The soup and salad bar had a lot to choose from, along with the warm dishes which was a maple flank steak and a pork dish. Very good!

Recently got turned on to "Jason's Deli" at 3831 Edwards Rd, Cincinnati in the Rookwood Commons area. Not bad. Tons of selections at a fair price. My favorite deal is the half sandwich and one trip to the salad bar for $7.99. Half sandwich is huge and comes with regular ruffled or baked chips, and the plate for the salad bar is big too. Lots of fresh items on the bar as well as hard boiled eggs or cheese when looking for a protein. Endless salad bar by itself is $7.69. Endless soft serve ice cream no matter what you order. Order water and squeeze a lemon in it to keep tab even lower. They have muffalettas, paninis, clubs, wraps, many choices of breads including white, rye, whole grain wheat, 9-grain artisan, herb focaccia, telera, croissants, onion bun, french, organic wheat wrap. They offer 6 soups... Chicken Noodle, Fire Roasted Tortilla, French Onion, Organic Vegetable, Tomato Basil, Broccoli Cheese, and also Chili, Southwest Chicken Chili, Spicy Seafood Gumbo, Chicken Pot Pie, a few pasta dishes, giant stuffed potatoes. I'd certainly go back if in the area, and just wish that I had one closer to me. Really can't go wrong there with price or selections.

I tried Tom Chee tonight. It was God awful!

3 of us ate there and it was a solid 3 thumbs down.

They will be on Shark Tank again tomorrow night. Way overrated.

Bakersfield - I don't get it. Cool place. Food was just OK. Nothing great.

 

Won't be back. Not worth the wait.

 

Agree -- Bakersfield is so over-rated it is silly. Zero chance I'll be back.

Carl's Deli in Hyde Park is, in my opinion, the best Deli in the Cincinnati area. I like Jason's, but it doesn't compare to Carl's in my opinion.

I take my son and daughter there occasionally when we're down on the Levee, I've found it to be okay. The grilled cheese with onions and mushrooms (on rye, I think) is pretty good. Not "great", but I'll certainly be back with the kids.

Funny you should say that. When the hype started, I just was never intrigued enough to ever try them and still haven't. Thanks for the heads up.

Personally I've enjoyed it when I have been there. I have gotten some sort of Goetta sandwich that was very good and also some sort of bacon grilled cheese that I enjoyed. The best thing I have ever had there, though they did not have it the last time I went, was their blue cheese chilli. Sounds gross, but the blue cheese added a nice creaminess and tang to their chilli.

Don't know if its ever been mentioned, but the hot counter in the deli at the Newport Kroger's Super Duper Marketplace is phenomenal.

 

Eating a meal in the middle of a grocery store might not be everyone's idea of fabulous if you're looking for atmosphere, but for me it's entertaining to people watch while I'm stuffing my face with gourmet quality fair on the cheap. They actually have a section in the middle of the deli and cheese area with ample seating with flowery decorated dark wood glazed tables and matching high-up wooden chairs. They serve lunch from ? - 2:00 p.m. and then dinner from 4:00 p.m. - ?

 

Here's the deal...

 

With your Kroger plus card it's around $5 for lunch, and $6 for dinner to choose from about 6 different entrees calling your name through the hot counter window where there's typically a choice of beef, pork, chicken, fish, or pasta done up gourmet quality in a variety of ways carved in front of you, and offered at unselfish portions with 2 additional choices from the numerous sides that cover the gamut of possibilities of starches or greens.

 

I've seen stuff like garlic and olive oil drenched asparagus, brussels sprouts, fresh cut green beans, lima beans, mixed veggies, scalloped potatoes, mashed potatoes etc... all served with a multi-grain dinner roll.

 

If baked or fried chicken is your thing that is always offered as well.

 

Directly to the left of the counter there are a variety of beverage choices where my go to is the 32 ounce zero calorie vitamin water in a couple different flavors for 1 additional dollar. If you don't mind eating out of a plastic to go type tray with plastic utensils, (I don't as the food quality is worth it), then you're set.

 

Total damage w/ beverage is $6 for lunch, $7 for dinner, for hot and fresh gourmet style, minus restaurant overhead, and no tipping any pretentious servers.

 

If you're not already stuffed and pleased when finishing your meal, you're so close to the bakery where there's almost always a free sample of some dessert type offering, which I guarantee you won't need much more than a little nibble of.

 

Then to kill two birds with one stone, you can then take care of your grocery shopping, but hang on to your deli receipt so no one thinks that you pilfered that 32 ounce vitamin water that you couldn't completely down with your meal, and finished it while shopping. And we all know that you spend less while shopping on a full stomach.

 

For a single dude who's not about to busy myself much in the kitchen, dinner made with home cooked love is always ready.
