February 1, 201313 yr I've seen Greyskull but I'm not familiar with it enough to comment. Westside is the way to go...if you're at a certain level IMO. For the beginners out there I think it would do more harm than good. But there is no arguing that for the experienced trainee/athlete, that the conjugate method that Westside uses is pretty much the standard for becoming strong and explosive. Agreed on Westside. I should have mentioned that in my post.
February 1, 201313 yr This thread just about gives me a panic attack. I haven't done any significant regular exercise since I graduated from college and I've never done any serious weight training. I'd like to get into the routine of doing both but there are so many recommendations of programs and other stuff out there that I don't even know where to begin. How do I even get started on these things? I'm a pretty well-educated guy and there are words being thrown around in here that may as well be in Aramaic.

I just started my rookie fitness program 22 days ago. What has kept me motivated is having a goal and a routine. I don't know what YOUR goal or routine should be. But once you establish a goal and a routine, you are well on your way! Good luck! And keep us posted on your progress!
February 2, 201313 yr Just completed the 5k distance on the treadmill. Had it set on 12 minute miles so about 37 minutes or so without stopping. 2 weeks ago I didn't think this would ever be possible. I want to thank you guys for allowing me to share my results and get some feedback. It really does help.

February 2, 201313 yr I do and I love it. JVCD does and has great numbers, much better than mine. Woodsy uses it before finishing a day w/ a Crossfit WOD. Which template are you doing? I actually didn't know I was doing the Jim Wendler program until I happen to look it up yesterday, but I'm doing 4 days a week: Monday - Chest Tuesday - Back Thursday - Shoulders Friday - Legs I need to start eating more calories so I can build some muscle then cut later on. I struggle to eat 2,000 calories a lot of days so it's gonna be hard for me. I'm gonna aim for 3,000 a day. Do you guys think this would be enough calories to build muscle. I weigh 180 pounds right now, I'd like to get to around 210 before I start cutting down.
February 2, 201313 yr Author How about an old fashioned strength and cardio workout today? It's called shoveling snow.

Don't worry about target weights and all of that. I maintain 175 and continue to get stronger. Also unless you plan on adding a lot of fat no way do you need to gain 30lbs. What so your works look like?

I'm a huge proponent if strength programs that are centered around compound barbell lifts. Adding strength should be step 1.
February 2, 201313 yr Author Day 24: Never thought I would be doing: Box jumps Rock star jumps Sumo jump squats Traveling push-ups Mountain climbers Elbow to hand planks Jump lunges Boxing (with weights) Jumping jacks (with weights) But I'm doing it and I love it!

I have never been much of a swimmer. I know there are YMCA swim fitness programs. I'm very motivated with working out now. But I foresee the knees being a limitation to how much I can do. Swimming could be the answer.
February 3, 201313 yr Down one pound but I literally did nothing. I have my sickness to thank for that. I feel back to 100% finally. Back to the gym Monday.

Not sure where you live, but I'd bet there is a Masters group close by. I'd recommend joining it.
